The question, in short

Expand a product of 4x and a bracket, then factorise a quadratic expression in y.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Multiply 4x by each term inside the bracket x − 5 and simplify.

  1. 14x × x = 4x²
  2. 24x × (−5) = −20x
  3. 34x(x − 5) = 4x² − 20x

Answer4x² − 20x

Part (b) · 2 marks

Write y² − 9y + 20 as a product of two brackets.

  1. 1Look for two numbers that multiply to 20 and add to −9
  2. 2These numbers are −4 and −5
  3. 3y² − 9y + 20 = (y − 4)(y − 5)

Answer(y − 4)(y − 5)
