The question, in short
A straight line L is shown on a grid passing through (−4, 3), (0, 1), (2, 0) and (4, −1). Find an equation for L in the form y = mx + c.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Solution · 3 marks
- 1Identify two points on line L: (−4, 3) and (4, −1)
- 2Calculate gradient: (−1 − 3) / (4 − (−4)) = (−4) / 8 = −1/2
- 3Use point-slope form with point (4, −1): y − (−1) = −1/2 (x − 4)
- 4Simplify: y + 1 = −1/2 x + 2
- 5y = −1/2 x + 1
Answery = −1/2 x + 1
