The question, in short

A circle sits inside square ABCD, touching all four sides, with the four corner regions shaded. Given the shaded area is 80 cm², find diagonal AC to 3 significant figures.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 1Let the radius be r, so the square has side 2r.
  2. 2Shaded area = 4r² − πr² = 80, so r² = 80 ÷ (4 − π) = 93.20.
  3. 3r = 9.654, so the side of the square is 19.31 cm.
  4. 4AC = √(19.31² + 19.31²) = 27.3
