The question, in short

Compare the water volume in a full cylinder (radius 10 cm, height 33 cm) with the spare capacity in a cuboid 35 cm by 28 cm by 20 cm holding water 9 cm deep, to show the cuboid will not overflow.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Water in cuboid = 35 × 28 × 9 = 8820 cm³
  2. 2Cylinder = π × 10² × 33 = 10 367.3 cm³
  3. 3Total water = 8820 + 10 367.3 = 19 187.3 cm³
  4. 4Cuboid volume = 35 × 28 × 20 = 19 600 cm³
  5. 519 187.3 < 19 600, so the cuboid is not full

AnswerTotal water = 19 187.3 cm³, which is less than the cuboid volume of 19 600 cm³, so the cuboid will not be full
