The question, in short

Given y = 9 − x², use algebraic integration to calculate the area of the finite region enclosed between the curve and the x-axis.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 5 marks

  1. 19 − x² = 0 gives x = ±3
  2. 2Area = ∫ from −3 to 3 of (9 − x²) dx
  3. 3= [9x − x³/3] from −3 to 3
  4. 4= (27 − 9) − (−27 + 9)
  5. 5= 18 − (−18) = 36
