1. The Right Angle on a Diameter
Take a diameter AB. Pick any point C on the circle and join it to A and to B.
Rule
The angle at C is always . Reason: angle in a semicircle is 90°.
Key idea
It is the angle at the centre rule in disguise: the diameter makes at O, and half of that is .
Key idea
This fact is often called Thales' theorem, after Thales of Miletus, a Greek thinker who lived around 600 BC. Later Greek writers said he was the first to prove it, though historians cannot be completely sure.
2. Find the Angle
The usual 1- or 2-mark question gives you one angle and asks for another, with a reason. The 90° at C does most of the work.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. AB is a diameter, C is on the circle, and the angle at A is given.
- 2
— C sits on the circle and looks at the diameter, so angle in a semicircle is 90°. Mark it on the diagram.
- 3
— Angles in a triangle add up to 180°, so take away the two angles you know.
- 4
— 180 − 90 = 90, then 90 − 37 = 53. Check: 37 + 90 + 53 = 180.
Key idea
Shortcut: the two angles at A and B always add up to . So the answer is just .
Key idea
Write the reason in full: “angle in a semicircle is 90°”. Just writing “AB is a diameter” does not name the rule. Marking 90° at C on the diagram can already earn a mark for working.
Common mistake
Putting the right angle at A or B. It is always at the point on the circle, opposite the diameter.
3. Radii Make Isosceles Triangles
Exams often draw a radius from the centre O to the point on the circle. Every radius is the same length, so you get isosceles triangles.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. AC is a diameter, O is the centre, B is on the circle and OB is drawn. Find angle OBA and angle OCB.
- 2
— Both are radii of the same circle, so triangle OAB is isosceles.
- 3
— In an isosceles triangle the two base angles are equal.
- 4
— Angle in a semicircle is 90°, because AC is a diameter.
- 5
— Angle ABC is split by OB into two parts, so take the 58° away from the 90°.
- 6
— Radii again, so triangle OBC is isosceles too. Its base angles are equal.
Key idea
Check with the big triangle ABC: . Give a reason for each angle: “base angles of an isosceles triangle” and “angle in a semicircle”.
4. Lengths in a Semicircle
The right angle at C gives a right-angled triangle. The diameter is opposite the right angle, so it is the longest side, the hypotenuse.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. AB is the diameter, and we want the third side BC.
- 2
— Angle ACB is 90°, so use Pythagoras. The diameter is the hypotenuse, so it goes on its own.
- 3
— We want a shorter side, so subtract the smaller square from the bigger one.
- 4
— Square each number first: 13² = 169 and 5² = 25.
- 5
— Square root to undo the square. A length is always positive.
- 6
— The two shorter sides meet at the right angle, so they are the base and the height.
Common mistake
Adding the squares when the diameter is known. The diameter is the longest side, so subtract.
5. Find the Diameter or Radius
Sometimes you know the two shorter sides and must find the diameter, or the radius. This time you add the squares.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. AB is a diameter. Find the radius of the circle.
- 2
— The angle at C is 90°, so the diameter AB is the hypotenuse. To find the hypotenuse, add the squares.
- 3
— Square each number first: 7² = 49 and 24² = 576.
- 4
— Square root to undo the square. This is the diameter.
- 5
— The radius is half the diameter, because O is the midpoint of AB.
Common mistake
Stopping at 25 cm when the question asks for the radius. Read the last word of the question again.
6. Find an Angle With Trigonometry
If the question asks for an angle and gives you two sides, use trigonometry in the right-angled triangle. For two shorter sides, use tan:
Formula
is the angle you want. “Opposite” is the side facing it. “Adjacent” is the shorter side next to it. The hypotenuse (the diameter) is not used here.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. AB is a diameter. Find angle CAB.
- 2
— Angle in a semicircle is 90°, so triangle ABC is right-angled at C.
- 3
— From A, BC is opposite and AC is adjacent, so use tan.
- 4
— 9 ÷ 12 = 0.75. Use inverse tan on your calculator to turn the ratio into an angle.
- 5
— 36.869…°, rounded to 1 decimal place.
Key idea
If you have the diameter and one side, use sin or cos instead, because the diameter is the hypotenuse.
7. Spot the Diameter (Extended)
The rule works backwards too: if the angle at a point on the circle is 90°, the side opposite it is a diameter. Exams use this to ask “which line is a diameter?” or “where is the centre?”.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. P, Q and R are on a circle. Which side of triangle PQR is a diameter?
- 2
— Angles in a triangle add up to 180°.
- 3
— 180 − 34 = 146, then 146 − 56 = 90.
- 4
— The 90° is at R, so the side opposite R, PQ, is the diameter.
- 5
— Every diameter passes through the centre, and the centre is halfway along it.
Key idea
So for any right-angled triangle, the circle through its three corners has the hypotenuse as its diameter.
8. Which Method? Read the Question
Look for a line through the centre with both ends on the circle.
| You see | You do |
| AB is a diameter, angle at C | it is 90° |
| Diameter and one more angle | 90°, then angles in a triangle |
| Diameter and one side | Pythagoras' Theorem |
| Diameter and the two shorter sides | Pythagoras: add the squares, then halve for the radius |
| Two sides, want an angle | 90° at C, then tan, sin or cos |
| A radius drawn to the circle | Isosceles triangle: equal base angles |
| A 90° angle on the circle | The side opposite it is a diameter |
| Angle at O, not a diameter | Angle at the Centre |
| Diameter plus other facts | Combining Circle Theorems |
Key idea
If the question says O is the centre and a line passes through O, mark the at once.
