1. The Right Triangle in a Bearing

Go 15 km on a bearing of 040°. Draw a line due north and a line due east. Your path is the hypotenuse of a right triangle.

SideHow to find it
East, opposite the bearingdistance ×
North, next to the bearingdistance ×

Rule

The bearing angle sits at the start, between the north line and the path. That fixes which side is opposite.

2. How Far East, How Far North

The 2-mark question: how far east of is ? Draw the right triangle first, then choose sine or cosine. The path is 15 km on a bearing of 040°.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Sketch it. Draw the north line at , then the path 40° clockwise from it. Draw a line from back to the north line to make a right angle. The path is the longest side, the hypotenuse.

  2. 2

    — The east side does not touch the 40° angle, so it is the opposite side. Opposite and hypotenuse means sine.

  3. 3

    — Multiply both sides by 15 to get east alone.

  4. 4

    — Use the calculator in degree mode, and give 3 significant figures.

  5. 5

    — The north side touches the 40° angle, so it is the adjacent side. Adjacent and hypotenuse means cosine.

  6. 6

    — Multiply both sides by 15 and use the calculator. 3 significant figures.

  7. 7

    — Check with Pythagoras: the two sides squared add up to the path squared.

Common mistake

Swapping sin and cos. The east side does not touch the 40° angle, so it is opposite: use sin.

3. Bearings Past 090°

When the bearing is past 090°, the path heads south or west. Do not use the bearing itself in sin or cos. Use the acute angle between the path and the north-south line, then sin for east or west and cos for north or south.

Bearing betweenAngle to usePath goes
000° and 090°the bearing, from northeast and north
090° and 180°180° − bearing, from southeast and south
180° and 270°bearing − 180°, from southwest and south
270° and 360°360° − bearing, from northwest and north

A boat sails 12 km on a bearing of 140°. How far east and how far south has it gone?

Worked example

  1. 1

    — 140° is past east and before south, so the path heads east and south.

  2. 2

    — The angle inside the right triangle is measured from the south line. It is the gap between 140° and 180°.

  3. 3

    — East is opposite the 40° angle, so use sine. 12 × 0.6428 = 7.71 to 3 significant figures.

  4. 4

    — South is next to the 40° angle, so use cosine. 12 × 0.7660 = 9.19.

Common mistake

Using . 140° is not an angle in the triangle. Take it from 180° first, to get the angle at the south line.

4. Finding a Bearing From Two Distances

The 4-mark question: is 9 km due north of . is 14 km due east of . Find the bearing of from .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Sketch it: above , to the right of . Draw a north line at as well, because the bearing is measured at .

  2. 2

    — In the triangle, (14) is opposite the angle at , and (9) is next to it. Opposite and adjacent, with no hypotenuse, means tangent.

  3. 3

    — Inverse tangent gives the angle inside the triangle at .

  4. 4

    — is straight down from , so the direction has a bearing of 180°. The line is 57.3° round from that, back towards east.

  5. 5

    — Bearings turn clockwise from north. is 57.3° before reaching south, so take 57.3° from 180°.

  6. 6

    — Check: is east and south of , so the bearing should be between 090° and 180°. It is.

Now the other way round: the bearing of from .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — At , (9) is opposite the angle and (14) is next to it, so tangent again.

  2. 2

    — Inverse tangent gives the angle at .

  3. 3

    — is straight to the left of , so the direction is 270°. is further round, towards north.

  4. 4

    — Going clockwise from west towards north makes the bearing bigger, so add.

  5. 5

    — Check with the back bearing: the reverse direction differs by 180°. Both methods agree.

Common mistake

Giving 57.3° as the bearing. Always sketch the north line at the point you stand at, then measure clockwise from it.

5. A Journey in Two Legs

A journey with two legs is often a right triangle. A ship sails 10 km on a bearing of 060°, then turns right through 90° and sails 8 km. Find how far it is from the start, and the bearing of the finish from the start.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Turning right is turning clockwise, so add 90° to the bearing. The second leg is on a bearing of 150°.

  2. 2

    — The turn is 90°, so the two legs meet at a right angle. is the start, the turn and the finish. Sketch it, with the north line at both and .

  3. 3

    — is opposite the right angle, so it is the hypotenuse. Pythagoras: square the two short sides and add.

  4. 4

    — Take the square root, to 3 significant figures.

  5. 5

    — At , (8) is opposite the angle and (10) is next to it. Tangent.

  6. 6

    — Inverse tangent gives the angle at between the first leg and the finish.

  7. 7

    — The first leg is on 060°. The finish is turned 38.7° further clockwise from it, as seen from , so add.

Common mistake

Giving 38.7° as the bearing. That angle is measured from the first leg, not from north. Add it to 060° first.

Key idea

Show your sketch and each line of working. Marks are given for the right triangle, for the distance and for the bearing, so a correct sketch earns marks even if a later number is wrong.

6. Which Method? Read the Question

Look for a right angle between north and east.
