Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 · Edexcel IGCSE Maths 4MA1

1. The Three Curves

The sine and cosine graphs are waves between 1 and −1. One full wave takes 360°. Learn these five points.

Anglesincos
0°01
90°10
180°0−1
270°−10
360°01

Key idea

The tangent graph is different. It repeats every 180°, has no value at 90° and 270°, and goes off the top and bottom there.

Key idea

The electricity in a wall socket is almost a perfect sine wave. In Egypt, the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar it makes 50 full 360° waves every second, so one wave lasts seconds. In Saudi Arabia it makes 60 a second.

2. Sketching the Curves

Sketch questions ask for the shape and the key points, not a perfect drawing. Plot the key points, then join them smoothly.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Draw the axes. Mark every 90°. Mark 1 and −1 on the axis, because sine and cosine never go beyond them.

  2. 2

    — Plot the five key points of from the table at the start of the lesson. Cosine starts at the top.

  3. 3

    — Join the points with one smooth curve, rounded at the top and bottom, with no corners or straight bits.

  4. 4

    — Check: these are the two points where .

The tangent curve is different. Draw it in three parts.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Draw dashed vertical lines here. Tangent has no value at these angles, so the curve can never cross them.

  2. 2

    — Tangent is 0 at 0°, 180° and 360°, so the curve crosses the axis at these points.

  3. 3

    — , and the curve repeats every 180°, so . and .

  4. 4

    — Draw one branch from up towards the 90° line, one from the bottom of 90° through up towards 270°, and one from the bottom of 270° to . They get close to the dashed lines but never touch.

Common mistake

Drawing tangent as a wave, or joining the branches across the dashed lines. It has separate branches that shoot off the top and the bottom.

Key idea

If you are given a table of values, work each one out with the calculator in degree mode, plot the points, then join them smoothly. Marks are given for the points and for a smooth curve.

3. Reading a, b and c From a Graph

The most common question, worth up to 3 marks: a graph of is drawn and you read , and from it. Read three things off the graph: the top, the bottom and the length of one wave.

Rule

is the amplitude: how far the curve goes above or below its middle line. is the height of the middle line. The length of one wave is the period.

Formula

The middle line is halfway between the top and the bottom. is half the distance from the bottom to the top. One wave is the number of degrees before the curve starts to repeat.

The curve goes up to 4 and down to −2. One full wave takes 180°.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Read the three numbers off the graph first. Everything else comes from them.

  2. 2

    — The middle line is halfway between the top and the bottom, so add them and halve. Put the −2 in brackets so the sign is not lost.

  3. 3

    — 4 + (−2) = 2, and half of 2 is 1. The whole curve is lifted 1 up.

  4. 4

    — Half the distance from the bottom to the top. Subtracting the bottom, which is negative, needs brackets again.

  5. 5

    — Minus a minus makes a plus, so 4 − (−2) = 6. Half of 6 is 3. The curve goes 3 above and 3 below the middle line.

  6. 6

    — A plain cosine wave takes 360°. This one takes 180°, half as long, so 2 waves fit in 360°.

  7. 7

    — Put , and into .

  8. 8

    — Check: at 0° cosine is 1, so , the top of the graph.

Now a sine graph. The curve goes up to 5 and down to 1. One full wave takes 120°.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Read the three numbers off the graph.

  2. 2

    — The middle line is halfway between the top and the bottom.

  3. 3

    — Half the distance from the bottom to the top.

  4. 4

    — A plain sine wave takes 360°. This one takes 120°, a third as long, so 3 waves fit in 360°.

  5. 5

    — Put , and into .

  6. 6

    — Check: a quarter of a wave is 120° ÷ 4 = 30°, where a sine curve first reaches its top. , the top.

Common mistake

Taking as the top value, 4. The height is measured from the middle line, so .

Key idea

If one wave is longer than 360°, is a fraction. A wave that takes 720° gives .

4. Shifts: sin(x + b)

Another favourite: find points on . The number added inside the bracket slides the whole curve sideways. Adding 40 moves it 40° to the left.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. The 40 inside the bracket moves the curve 40° to the left, so every key point of lands 40° earlier.

  2. 2

    — The top of a sine curve is where the angle in the bracket is 90°. So set the whole bracket equal to 90.

  3. 3

    — Take 40 from both sides to get alone.

  4. 4

    — At the top, , so is just . The maximum point is .

  5. 5

    — Sine is 0 at 180° on its way down, so the curve crosses the axis at .

  6. 6

    — Sine is at its lowest at 270°, where it equals −1, so . The minimum point is .

  7. 7

    — Sine is 0 again at 360°, on its way up. The curve crosses the axis at .

A minus inside the bracket moves the curve the other way. Find the top and bottom of .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The top of a cosine curve is where the bracket is 0°. Add 30 to both sides. The curve has moved 30° to the right.

  2. 2

    — , so the maximum point is .

  3. 3

    — The bottom of a cosine curve is where the bracket is 180°, where cosine is −1. The minimum point is .

Key idea

Working back: if the top of a sine curve is at 50° instead of 90°, the curve moved 40° left, so in .

Common mistake

Moving the curve the wrong way. A plus inside the bracket moves it left. A minus moves it right.

5. Solving sin x = k

A calculator gives only one answer. The graph shows a second one between 0° and 360°. Exam questions say “solve for 0° ≤ x ≤ 360°”, and a 2-mark question wants both answers.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The equation. We want every angle from 0° to 360° whose sine is 0.4.

  2. 2

    — Use the inverse sine key, in degree mode. It gives the first answer, on the rising part of the curve.

  3. 3

    — The sine curve is symmetrical about 90°. The second answer is the same distance on the other side of 90°, so take the first from 180°.

  4. 4

    — Work out 180 − 23.6. Both 23.6° and 156.4° are between 0° and 360°.

  5. 5

    — Check the second answer on the calculator. It gives back 0.4.

Rule

For sine, the second answer is 180° minus the first. For cosine, it is 360° minus the first. For tangent, add 180°.

Key idea

Check with a sketch: gives 120° and 240°, both where the cosine curve is below the axis.

6. Solving cos x = k and tan x = k

Cosine and tangent have different curves, so their second answers use different rules. Here is each one.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The equation, to solve for 0° to 360°.

  2. 2

    — Inverse cosine on the calculator gives the first answer.

  3. 3

    — The cosine curve is symmetrical about 180°. The second answer is the same distance before 360° as the first is after 0°. So take the first from 360°.

  4. 4

    — Work out 360 − 72.5. The answers are 72.5° and 287.5°.

Key idea

A question may ask for “the reflex angle”. That just means the answer bigger than 180°. For it is 287.5°.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The equation, to solve for 0° to 360°.

  2. 2

    — Inverse tangent gives the first answer.

  3. 3

    — The tangent curve repeats every 180°, so the next answer is 180° later.

  4. 4

    — Try adding 180° once more. 428.2° is bigger than 360°, so it is out of range. The answers are 68.2° and 248.2°.

Common mistake

Using “180° minus the first answer” for every equation. That rule is only for sine. Cosine uses 360° minus, and tangent adds 180°.

7. When k Is Negative

When is negative, the calculator gives a negative angle. That is not in the range, but the same rules still work. Then add 360° to bring an answer back into 0° to 360°.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The equation. Sine is negative below the axis, so both answers are between 180° and 360°.

  2. 2

    — The calculator gives a negative angle. It is not between 0° and 360°, so it is not an answer yet.

  3. 3

    — Use the same sine rule, 180° minus the first answer. Put the negative angle in brackets.

  4. 4

    — Minus a negative makes a plus. 216.9° is in range.

  5. 5

    — Now bring the first answer into range. Adding a full turn of 360° gives the same direction.

  6. 6

    — Both are between 180° and 360°, as we expected.

Key idea

For the calculator gives 107.5°, so the second answer is 360° − 107.5° = 252.5°. For it gives −45°, so add 180° and 360° to get 135° and 315°.

Common mistake

Ignoring the minus sign and giving 36.9° and 143.1°. Those are the answers for , which has the curve above the axis.

8. Rearrange First

Exam equations are often not in the form yet, for example . Get the trig on its own first, then solve as before.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. The has a 3 in front and a 2 added.

  2. 2

    — Take 2 from both sides to remove the +2.

  3. 3

    — Divide both sides by 3 to get alone.

  4. 4

    — Inverse cosine. A negative cosine gives an angle bigger than 90° on the calculator.

  5. 5

    — Cosine's second answer is 360° minus the first.

  6. 6

    — Both are between 90° and 270°, where the cosine curve is below the axis.

Key idea

Show every line. Most of the marks are for the working: one for rearranging, one for each answer. An answer found by guessing scores about 1 mark.

9. Which Method? Read the Question
