1. What Is a Combined Event?
A combined event is two things happening together: two spinners, a drink and a snack, or a person sorted by two facts.
| You have | Show it with |
| Two lists of choices | a list of pairs |
| Two spinners or dice | a table of scores |
| People sorted two ways | a two-way table |
Rule
Then use .
2. Completing a Two-Way Table
The 3 or 4-mark question: 80 students, 38 boys. 12 boys walk. 20 girls take the bus. 16 come by car, 7 of them girls. 27 walk.
Worked example
- 1
— Everyone is a boy or a girl, so take the 38 boys away from the 80 students.
- 2
— The car column has only one gap. 16 come by car and 7 of them are girls, so the other 9 are boys.
- 3
— Now the boys row has only one gap. The boys must add to 38, so take away the 12 who walk and the 9 who come by car.
- 4
— The walk column has one gap. 27 walk and 12 of them are boys, so 15 are girls.
- 5
— Add down the bus column: 17 boys and 20 girls.
- 6
— Check: the girls row must add to the 42 girls from the first line. It does, so the table is right.
| Travel | Boys | Girls |
| Walk | 12 | 15 |
| Bus | 17 | 20 |
| Car | 9 | 7 |
| Total | 38 | 42 |
Rule
Start with a row or column that has only one gap. Every row and every column must add to its total.
Key idea
Every correct cell earns marks, even if you cannot finish the table. Later parts are marked from your own table, so one slip does not lose you everything.
3. Probability From a Two-Way Table
The 1 or 2-mark question: one student is picked at random. Put the right cell over the right total.
Worked example
- 1
— A girl who walks is one cell: 15. Any of the 80 students could be picked, so divide by 80.
- 2
— Simplify: divide the top and the bottom by 5.
- 3
— Anyone who takes the bus counts, so use the bus total, 37, over all 80. It does not simplify.
- 4
— Not car means everyone except the 16 who come by car.
- 5
— 80 − 16 = 64. Then divide the top and the bottom by 16.
- 6
— The question picks one of the girls, so only the 42 girls can be picked. 7 of them come by car.
- 7
— Simplify: divide the top and the bottom by 7.
Common mistake
"One of the girls is picked" and dividing by 80. Only the 42 girls can be picked, so divide by 42.
4. A Table of Scores
The 2-mark question: spin two spinners and add. Spinner A has 2, 4, 6. Spinner B has 1, 2, 3, 4. Fill every cell, then count.
Worked example
- 1
— The row for : add 1 to each number on A, so 2 + 1, 4 + 1 and 6 + 1.
- 2
— The next row: add 2 to each number on A.
- 3
— Add 3 to each number on A.
- 4
— Add 4 to each number on A. Every row is done, so the table is full.
- 5
— A has 3 sections and B has 4, so there are 12 cells. Each cell is equally likely.
- 6
— Count the cells that show 7: one in the row and one in the row.
- 7
— Simplify: divide the top and the bottom by 2.
Common mistake
Dividing by 8 because there are 8 different totals, 3 to 10. Some totals appear more than once, so divide by the 12 cells.
5. Differences and Repeated Numbers
Some questions subtract instead of add, or a spinner shows the same number twice. Spinner A has 1, 2, 2. Spinner B has 1, 3, 4, 6. The score is the difference: the bigger number minus the smaller.
Worked example
- 1
— The row for . Take the smaller number from the bigger one each time: 1 − 1, 3 − 1, 4 − 1, 6 − 1.
- 2
— The row for : 2 − 1, 3 − 2, 4 − 2, 6 − 2. It is 3 − 2, not 2 − 3, because a difference is never negative.
- 3
— Spinner A shows 2 on two sections, so write the 2 row twice. Each section is its own equally likely outcome.
- 4
— 3 sections on A times 4 sections on B. Every cell is equally likely.
- 5
— Count the cells that show 1: two in each 2 row, so 4.
- 6
— Simplify: divide the top and the bottom by 4.
Common mistake
Writing the 2 row only once. That gives 8 cells, not 12. Every section of a spinner needs its own row, even if the number repeats.
Key idea
A table of products works the same way: multiply the row number by the column number in every cell. If the question says which number to take from which, follow it exactly.
6. Listing Every Combination
The 2-mark question: choose a drink (tea T, juice J, water W) and a snack (apple A, biscuit B, cake C). List every pair.
Worked example
- 1
— Fix the first drink, tea, and pair it with every snack in turn.
- 2
— Move to the next drink, juice, and run through the same three snacks.
- 3
— The last drink, water, with the same three snacks.
- 4
— Check the count: 3 drinks times 3 snacks makes 9 pairs, and the list has 9.
Common mistake
Writing TA and also AT. They are the same meal, so write it once. Missing one pair loses a mark, so work in order.
Key idea
Choosing 2 different things from one list? Fruits A, B, K, M give AB, AK, AM, BK, BM, KM: 6 pairs. BA is the same choice as AB, so leave it out.
7. Two Events Together: Multiply
The 3 or 4-mark question: two separate events, like a bus and a train. If one does not change the other, they are independent.
Formula
A is the first event and B is the second. For both to happen, multiply.
Example: the bus is on time with probability 0.8. The bus and the train are both on time with probability 0.56. Find the probability that at least one of them is on time.
Worked example
- 1
— Both on time means multiply, and the question says the answer is 0.56.
- 2
— Put in the bus probability, 0.8.
- 3
— Divide both sides by 0.8 to undo the multiply.
- 4
— Late is the opposite of on time, and the two must add to 1.
- 5
— The same idea for the train.
- 6
— Both late is two events together, so multiply.
- 7
— Every outcome has at least one on time except both late. So take that one case away from 1.
- 8
— 1 − 0.06 = 0.94.
Common mistake
Adding for "both". 0.8 + 0.7 is more than 1. Both means multiply.
Key idea
For picks one after another, see Tree Diagrams for Independent Events. If the first pick is not put back, see Tree Diagrams for Dependent Events.
8. Which Method? Read the Question
Look at what the question gives you.
