1. The Reason Bank

Most circle questions say "give a reason for each stage". The reason marks need these exact words.

You spotYou write
Angle at O and at the edgeangle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference
A diameterangle in a semicircle is 90°
Two angles on one arcangles in the same segment are equal
Four points on the circleopposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral add up to 180°
Tangent and radiustangent is perpendicular to the radius
Two tangents from a pointtangents from an external point are equal in length
Tangent and chordalternate segment theorem

Rule

Add the plain angle facts too: base angles of an isosceles triangle are equal, angles in a triangle add up to 180°, alternate angles are equal, angles on a straight line add up to 180°, angles at a point add up to 360°, angles in a quadrilateral add up to 360°.

Key idea

Each correct angle earns a mark, and the reasons earn their own marks. So write every angle you find, with its reason, even if you cannot finish.

2. Find It, Then Say Why

The 1+1 mark question: part (i) wants the angle, part (ii) wants the reason. One diagram often has two of these.

P, Q, R and S are on a circle, with S on the same side of PQ as R. PR is a diameter and .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — PR is a diameter and Q is on the circle, so angle in a semicircle is 90°.

  2. 2

    — S and R both stand on chord PQ, on the same side of it, so angles in the same segment are equal.

Common mistake

Short reasons like "cyclic quad", "same arc" or "circle theorem". They score 0. Write the full sentence.

3. Cyclic, Centre, Isosceles

The 4 or 5-mark question: A, B, C and D are on a circle, centre O. . Find angle OBD.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — A and C are opposite corners of ABCD, so opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral add up to 180°.

  2. 2

    — O and A both look at chord BD, so angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference.

  3. 3

    — OB and OD are radii, so triangle OBD is isosceles: base angles of an isosceles triangle are equal.

  4. 4

    — Angles in a triangle add up to 180°, so the two base angles share what is left.

  5. 5

    — The two base angles are equal, so each one is half of 68°.

Common mistake

Forgetting to say why the triangle is isosceles. Write that OB and OD are radii.

4. Diameter Chains

The 3 or 4-mark question: a diameter gives a free , and the triangle sum does the rest.

AB is a diameter. C and D are on the circle, with D on the same side of AC as B. . Find angle ADC.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — AB is a diameter and C is on the circle, so angle in a semicircle is 90°.

  2. 2

    — Triangle ABC now has two known angles, and angles in a triangle add up to 180°.

  3. 3

    — D and B both stand on chord AC, on the same side of it, so angles in the same segment are equal.

Key idea

Once you have one angle on an arc, every other angle on that arc, same side, is free.

5. Tangent and Parallel Lines

The 5-mark question: AB is the tangent at B. C, D and E are on the circle. AB is parallel to ED and . Find angle DCE.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — AB is parallel to ED, and BE crosses both in a Z shape, so alternate angles are equal.

  2. 2

    — The 68° is between tangent AB and chord BE. D is across chord BE, so by the alternate segment theorem it gets the same angle.

  3. 3

    — Add the two angles you know in triangle BDE.

  4. 4

    — Angles in a triangle add up to 180°, so the third angle is what is left.

  5. 5

    — C and B both stand on chord DE, on the same side of it, so angles in the same segment are equal.

Common mistake

Writing "alternate" alone. Say "alternate angles are equal" for the parallel lines and "alternate segment theorem" for the tangent.

6. Equal Sides and a Tangent

Exams often mark two chords as equal with little dashes. That gives an isosceles triangle with no radii in sight. Use it next to the tangent.

ST is the tangent at A. B, C and D are on the circle, with D on the small arc BC. and . Find angle BDC.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The 64° is between tangent AT and chord AB. C is across chord AB, so by the alternate segment theorem it gets the same angle.

  2. 2

    — AB = AC, so triangle ABC is isosceles and base angles of an isosceles triangle are equal.

  3. 3

    — Angles in a triangle add up to 180°, so the angle at A is what is left.

  4. 4

    — A and D are opposite corners of ABDC, so opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral add up to 180°.

Common mistake

Writing "isosceles" with no reason. Say which sides are equal: AB = AC, so the base angles are equal.

7. Two Tangents and the Centre

Two tangents from one point make a kite with the two radii. Two of its angles are 90°, so the angle at the centre comes from 360°.

DA and DC are tangents to a circle, centre O. . B is on the big arc AC and E is on the small arc. Find angle AOC, the reflex angle AOC, angle ABC and angle AEC.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — OA and OC are radii that meet the tangents, so tangent is perpendicular to the radius.

  2. 2

    — OADC has four angles, and angles in a quadrilateral add up to 360°.

  3. 3

    — The reflex angle is the rest of the turn round O: angles at a point add up to 360°.

  4. 4

    — B is on the big arc, so it looks at the same arc as the 130°. Angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference, so halve it.

  5. 5

    — E is on the small arc, so it looks at the other side, the reflex 230°. Halve that.

Key idea

Check: ABCE is a cyclic quadrilateral, and . The opposite angles add up to 180°, so both answers fit.

Common mistake

Halving 130° for a point on the small arc. A point on the small arc uses the reflex angle at O.

8. Angles in Terms of x

Some questions give an angle as x, then ask for another angle "in terms of x". Use the same reasons as with numbers. Keep x in every line.

A, B and C are on a circle, centre O. C and O are on the same side of AB. . Find angle ACB in terms of x. Then, if , find x.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — OA and OB are radii, so triangle OAB is isosceles: base angles of an isosceles triangle are equal.

  2. 2

    — Angles in a triangle add up to 180°. Collect the two x's: x + x = 2x.

  3. 3

    — C looks at the same chord AB as O. Angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference, so halve it.

  4. 4

    — Halve each part: 180 ÷ 2 = 90 and 2x ÷ 2 = x.

  5. 5

    — Both expressions are angle ACB, so set them equal.

  6. 6

    — Add x to both sides and take 20 from both sides.

  7. 7

    — Divide by 2. Check: OAB = 35°, AOB = 110°, ACB = 55° = 35° + 20°.

Common mistake

Halving only part of the bracket: is , not .

9. Prove It

The 4 or 5-mark proof: ABC is the tangent at B. D, E and F are on the circle. and . Prove that ABC is parallel to EF.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — B and D both stand on chord EF, on the same side of it, so angles in the same segment are equal.

  2. 2

    — The 64° is between tangent BC and chord BF. E is across chord BF, so by the alternate segment theorem it gets the same angle.

  3. 3

    — Triangle BEF now has two known angles, and angles in a triangle add up to 180°.

  4. 4

    — These two angles sit in a Z shape across BF and they are equal. So they are alternate angles, and ABC is parallel to EF.

Rule

End a proof with the fact you were asked to prove, and why: "alternate angles are equal, so ABC is parallel to EF".

10. Which Method? Read the Question

Mark every angle on the diagram as you find it. The next step is usually right next to it.
