1. Reading a Distance–Time Graph

Distance from home goes up the side. Time goes along the bottom. The shape of the line tells the story.

LineMeaning
Going upmoving away
Flatstopped
Going downcoming back
Steeperfaster

Key idea

The slope of each straight part is the speed for that part.

2. Which Part Was Faster?

The 1-mark question: compare the slopes. The steeper line is faster. Give the reason.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Take the first part of the line, before the stop. The time it lasts is the end time minus the start time.

  2. 2

    — The distance gone is the end distance minus the start distance. Read both off the side scale.

  3. 3

    — Speed is distance divided by time.

  4. 4

    — Now the part after the stop. Speed is in km per hour, so change 45 minutes into hours: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75.

  5. 5

    — The distance gone in this part: end distance minus start distance.

  6. 6

    — Speed is distance divided by time, using the time in hours.

  7. 7

    — Compare the two speeds. The bigger speed is the steeper line.

  8. 8

    — Write the part AND the reason. The reason is what earns the mark.

Common mistake

Saying "before" with no reason. Write that the line is steeper, or give both speeds.

3. Drawing the Rest of the Journey

The 2-mark question gives the stay and the speed home. Work out each time, then draw.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — He rests for 45 minutes. A rest means the distance does not change, so draw a flat line at 24 km.

  2. 2

    — The ride home must go all the way back to 0, so it covers the 24 km on the graph.

  3. 3

    — The question gives the speed, 16 km/h. Time is distance divided by speed.

  4. 4

    — 0.5 of an hour is half of 60 minutes, which is 30 minutes.

  5. 5

    — The ride home starts when the rest ends, at 12:45. Add the time it takes to get the arrival time.

  6. 6

    — Join the two points with a straight ruler line. It goes down to 0 because he is home again.

Common mistake

Adding 1 hour 50 minutes for 1.5 hours. Half an hour is 30 minutes.

4. Speed From the Graph

Pick one straight part. Read how far it goes and how long it takes.

Formula

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Read the two ends of the straight part: the time and the distance at each end.

  2. 2

    — The distance covered is the size of the change in distance. Going down still means 24 km travelled.

  3. 3

    — The time taken is the end time minus the start time: 1 hour 30 minutes, which is 1.5 hours.

  4. 4

    — Speed is distance divided by time. Speed is never negative, even on the way back.

Key idea

Change minutes to hours first: 45 minutes is 0.75 hours.

5. Average Speed for the Whole Journey

The 3-mark question: the average speed for the whole journey. A rest still counts, because the clock keeps running.

Formula

A cyclist leaves home at 09:00 and rides 18 km out in 1 h 30 min. She rests for 30 min. She then rides home in 1 h.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — She goes out and comes back, so add both parts. The total distance travelled is not 0, even though she ends at home.

  2. 2

    — Add all the times in hours: out 1.5, rest 0.5, back 1. The rest is included.

  3. 3

    — Total distance divided by total time.

Common mistake

Leaving out the rest. 36 ÷ 2.5 = 14.4 is wrong, because the rest time counts.

Common mistake

Averaging the speeds. Out was 12 km/h and back was 18 km/h, and the mean 15 is wrong. Always use total distance ÷ total time.

6. Where Two Journeys Meet

The question “when do they meet?”: two journeys are drawn on one graph. They meet where the two lines cross.

Asha leaves town A at 10:00 and cycles at 12 km/h towards town B. Ben leaves B at 11:00 and cycles towards A at 20 km/h. B is 44 km from A, and distances are measured from A.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Pick 12:00 for Asha, 2 hours after she starts. Distance is speed times time.

  2. 2

    — Ben starts 44 km from A and moves towards A. In 1 hour he rides 20 km, so take it away from 44.

  3. 3

    — Both are at the same time and the same distance from A, so the two lines cross at this point.

  4. 4

    — Read the time from the bottom axis and the distance from the side axis.

Common mistake

Giving Ben's 20 km ridden. The meeting distance is read from A on the side scale, and it is the same for both people.

7. Which Method? Read the Question

Look at the part of the line the question points to.

Key idea

Read the scale on each axis before you count squares.

Key idea

Show every line of working. Marks are given for the distances, the times and the division, so a bare answer scores only 1 mark if it is wrong.
