1. What an Enlargement Does
An enlargement changes the size of a shape but not its shape. Two numbers control it: the scale factor and the centre.
Rule
Every side is multiplied by the scale factor. Every corner ends up scale factor times as far from the centre, in the same direction.
Key idea
A scale factor between 0 and 1 makes the shape smaller. It is still called an enlargement.
Key idea
The 141% button on a photocopier turns A4 into A3. It is an enlargement with scale factor : every length is multiplied by , and two A4 sheets fit exactly on one A3.
2. Enlarging From a Centre
The most common 2-mark question: enlarge a shape with scale factor 2, centre (2, 1). Always count from the centre.
Worked example
- 1
— Start from the centre. Every corner is measured from it.
- 2
— Take the centre's coordinates away from the corner's (or count squares) to see how far across and up it is.
- 3
— Multiply both moves by the scale factor. The image corner is twice as far from the centre, in the same direction.
- 4
— Add the new moves to the centre.
- 5
— Second corner: its moves from the centre.
- 6
— Multiply both moves by 2.
- 7
— Add the new moves to the centre.
- 8
— Third corner: its moves from the centre.
- 9
— Multiply both moves by 2.
- 10
— Add the new moves to the centre.
Common mistake
Counting the steps from the corner, or doubling the coordinates. That only works when the centre is (0, 0).
3. A Fraction Scale Factor
The 2-mark question can use a scale factor like or . Same method: the image comes out smaller and closer to the centre.
Worked example
- 1
— Start from the centre, as always.
- 2
— Corner minus centre gives the moves from the centre.
- 3
— A scale factor of one half makes the corner half as far from the centre.
- 4
— Add the shorter moves to the centre. The image is closer to the centre.
- 5
— Second corner: its moves from the centre.
- 6
— Halve both moves.
- 7
— Add the halved moves to the centre.
- 8
— Third corner: its moves from the centre are 4 and 0. Halving them gives 2 and 0.
- 9
— Add the halved moves to the centre.
Common mistake
Halving the corner's coordinates: (9, 1) is not sent to (4.5, 0.5). Count from the centre.
4. Enlarging From the Origin
When the centre is the origin , there is a quick way. A corner's coordinates are exactly its moves from the centre, so you multiply them.
Formula
is a corner of the object. is the scale factor. is the matching corner of the image. This only works when the centre is .
Worked example
- 1
— From the origin, the corner's coordinates are its moves from the centre.
- 2
— Multiply each coordinate by the scale factor 3.
- 3
— Work out each product.
- 4
— Same rule for the next corner.
- 5
— And for the last corner.
Now a fraction, with a negative coordinate. Take care with the sign.
Worked example
- 1
— A fraction scale factor makes the image smaller.
- 2
— Half of −6 is −3. A positive scale factor does not change the sign.
- 3
— Half of 4 is 2.
- 4
— Write the two new coordinates together.
Common mistake
Using this rule when the centre is not . Then you must count from the centre, as in the earlier cards.
Key idea
A positive scale factor keeps the image in the same quadrant as the object. It only moves the corners towards or away from the origin.
5. Scale Factor and Lengths
Some questions give only lengths. Every length of the shape is multiplied by the scale factor, so you can go forwards or backwards.
Formula
is the scale factor. The image length is the object length times . To go back, divide the image length by .
Worked example
- 1
— Every length is multiplied by the scale factor. Do each side on its own.
- 2
— Multiply the first side by 2.5.
- 3
— Multiply the second side by 2.5.
- 4
— Both sides got longer, as they should when the scale factor is bigger than 1.
Now going backwards: you know the image side and the scale factor.
Worked example
- 1
— We want the object side, which is the one that was multiplied.
- 2
— Dividing undoes multiplying.
- 3
— Work it out. The object side is 12 cm.
- 4
— Check: multiply back and you get the image side.
Common mistake
Adding the scale factor to the length. Enlarging multiplies, it never adds.
Key idea
Only lengths are multiplied by . Areas change by a different amount: see Area Factor of Similar Shapes.
6. Finding the Centre and Scale Factor
The 3-mark question shows both shapes. Find the scale factor from a pair of sides, and the centre from lines through matching corners.
Worked example
- 1
— Matching corners are in the same order on both shapes.
- 2
— Measure the same side on both shapes: the bottom edge.
- 3
— Scale factor is image side divided by object side.
- 4
— Draw a long straight line through one pair of matching corners.
- 5
— Draw a second line through another matching pair. One line is not enough, you need two.
- 6
— The centre is the point where the lines cross. A third pair, (3, 2) and (5, 3), also passes through it.
- 7
— Check: the image corner is twice as far from the centre as the object corner.
Common mistake
Dividing object by image. That gives , which would make the image smaller.
Key idea
To write it up, see Describing Transformations: Enlargement, scale factor 2, centre (1, 1).
7. Which Method? Read the Question
Look for the centre and the size of the scale factor.
| You see | You do |
| Enlarge, centre given | count from the centre, multiply |
| Centre is (0, 0) | multiply both coordinates by the scale factor |
| Scale factor less than 1 | same, the image shrinks |
| No centre given | multiply every side, draw anywhere |
| Find the scale factor | image side ÷ object side |
| Describe fully | Describing Transformations |
| Negative scale factor | Negative Enlargement |
Key idea
Check: every image side should be the scale factor times its object side.
