Introduction to Percentages

1. What a Percentage Is

«في المئة» تعني من كل مئة، فالنسبة المئوية هي عدد الأجزاء من مئة جزء. يمكن أن نكتب الكمية نفسها بثلاث صور: كسر، وعدد عشري، ونسبة مئوية. احفظ جيدًا الأمثلة المشهورة في الجدول، مثل النصف والربع وثلاثة الأرباع والخُمس والعُشر والثُّمن والثلث. وتذكّر: الشيء كاملًا يساوي مئة في المئة، ونصفه يساوي خمسين في المئة.

Per cent means out of 100. So 45% means 45 out of every 100.

A fraction, a decimal and a percentage can all show the same amount. Learn these by heart:

Key idea

The whole thing is always 100%. Half of it is 50%.

Key idea

The air you breathe is about $21%$ oxygen: in every 100 litres of air, about 21 litres are oxygen. Most of the rest, about $78%$ , is nitrogen.

2. Decimal to Percentage

لتحويل عدد عشري إلى نسبة مئوية: اضربه في مئة، أي حرّك الأرقام خانتين إلى اليسار. إذا كان بعد الفاصلة رقم واحد فقط، أضف صفرًا ليصبح عندك خانتان تحرّكهما، وهذا لا يغيّر القيمة. والأصفار التي في البداية تختفي بعد التحريك. الخطأ الشائع: تحريك الأرقام خانة واحدة فقط أو وضع صفر زائد؛ حرّك دائمًا خانتين.

The most common 1-mark question: write 0.45 as a percentage. Multiply by 100.

Worked example

$0.45 \times 100 = 45%$ — Per cent means out of 100, so multiply by 100. The digits move 2 places left: 0.45 becomes 45.

$0.3 = 0. 30$ — 0.3 has only one decimal place. Add a zero so there are two places to move. The value does not change.

$0.30 \times 100 = 30%$ — Now move the digits 2 places left: 30. So 0.3 is 30%, not 3%.

$0.06 \times 100 = 6%$ — Move 2 places left: 0.06 becomes 6. The zeros in front fall away, so it is 6%, not 60%.

Rule

Decimal to percentage: multiply by 100.

Common mistake

Writing 0.3 as 3%, or 0.06 as 60%. Always move the digits two places. 0.3 is 30%, and 0.06 is 6%.

3. Fraction to Percentage

لتحويل كسر إلى نسبة مئوية: إن أمكن، اجعل المقام مئة بضرب البسط والمقام في العدد نفسه، فيصبح البسط هو النسبة المئوية مباشرة. وإذا لم يمكن جعل المقام مئة، فاقسم البسط على المقام لتحصل على عدد عشري، ثم اضربه في مئة. في سؤال الدرجتين اكتب سطر الحساب كاملًا (القسمة ثم الضرب في مئة)، فهو يأخذ درجة الطريقة حتى لو أخطأت في النهاية. الخطأ الشائع: كتابة البسط والمقام جنبًا إلى جنب كأنهما نسبة؛ اقسم أولًا.

The 1 or 2-mark question: write $\frac{9}{25}$ as a percentage. If you can, make the bottom number 100.

Worked example

$\frac{9}{25} = \frac{9 \times 4}{25 \times 4}$ — 25 × 4 = 100, so multiply the bottom by 4. Multiply the top by 4 too, so the fraction keeps its value.

$= \frac{36}{100}$ — 9 × 4 = 36 and 25 × 4 = 100. Now the fraction is out of 100.

$= 36%$ — Per cent means out of 100, so 36 out of 100 is 36%.

When the bottom number cannot become 100, divide the top by the bottom. Then multiply by 100.

Worked example

$\frac{3}{8} = 3 \div 8 = 0.375$ — No whole number times 8 makes 100, so divide the top by the bottom. This turns the fraction into a decimal.

$0.375 \times 100 = 37.5%$ — Now change the decimal to a percentage the usual way: multiply by 100.

Key idea

On a 2-mark question, write the working $3 \div 8 \times 100$ . That line earns a mark for method, even if the final answer slips.

Common mistake

Writing $\frac{3}{8}$ as 3.8% or 38%. Divide first: it is 37.5%.

4. Harder Fractions: Simplify or Round

بعض الكسور تحتاج خطوة إضافية. إذا كان المقام كبيرًا ولا يتحول مباشرة إلى مئة، فبسّط الكسر أولًا بقسمة البسط والمقام على عامل مشترك، ثم اجعل المقام مئة. وإذا كان المقام لا يمكن أن يصبح مئة أبدًا، فاقسم البسط على المقام، وقد تحصل على عدد عشري لا ينتهي؛ اكتب منه عدة أرقام، واضرب في مئة، ثم قرّب الجواب النهائي إلى ثلاثة أرقام معنوية ما لم يطلب السؤال غير ذلك. الخطأ الشائع: التقريب مبكرًا قبل الضرب؛ احتفظ بالعدد الطويل وقرّب في النهاية فقط.

Some fractions need one more move. A big fraction: simplify it first. A decimal that never ends: round it.

Worked example

$\frac{33}{150}$ — The question. 150 does not go into 100, but the fraction can be made smaller first.

$= \frac{33 \div 3}{150 \div 3} = \frac{11}{50}$ — Both 33 and 150 divide by 3. Dividing top and bottom by the same number keeps the value.

$= \frac{11 \times 2}{50 \times 2} = \frac{22}{100}$ — 50 × 2 = 100, so multiply top and bottom by 2 to get a number out of 100.

$= 22%$ — 22 out of 100 is 22%.

Now a fraction whose decimal goes on for ever:

Worked example

$\frac{4}{9} = 4 \div 9 = 0.4444 \dots$ — 9 never makes 100, so divide. The 4s go on for ever, so write a few and then dots.

$0.4444 \dots \times 100 = 44.44 \dots %$ — Multiply by 100 to make it a percentage. The digits move 2 places left.

$\approx 44.4%$ — The answer never ends, so round it. Give 3 significant figures unless the question asks for something else.

Common mistake

Rounding too early: 0.44 × 100 = 44%, which loses marks. Keep the long decimal and round only the final answer.

5. Percentage to Decimal or Fraction

لتحويل نسبة مئوية إلى عدد عشري: اقسمها على مئة، أي حرّك الأرقام خانتين إلى اليمين. إذا كانت النسبة رقمًا واحدًا فضع صفرًا قبله ليملأ الخانة الأولى بعد الفاصلة. والنسبة الأكبر من مئة في المئة تعطي عددًا عشريًا أكبر من واحد. ولتحويلها إلى كسر: اكتبها بسطًا فوق مئة، ثم اقسم البسط والمقام على العدد نفسه حتى لا يبقى عامل مشترك، وهذه أبسط صورة. الخطأ الشائع: نسيان الصفر، فتصبح القيمة أكبر بعشر مرات.

The 1-mark question: write 36% as a decimal. Divide by 100. The 2-mark question asks for a fraction in its simplest form.

Worked example

$36% = 36 \div 100 = 0.36$ — Per cent means out of 100, so divide by 100. The digits move 2 places right: 36 becomes 0.36.

$4% = 4 \div 100 = 0.04$ — 4 has only one digit, so put a 0 in front of it to fill the second decimal place. It is 0.04, not 0.4.

$143% = 143 \div 100 = 1.43$ — More than 100% means more than one whole, so the decimal is bigger than 1. You still divide by 100.

$64% = \frac{64}{100}$ — For a fraction, write the percentage as a number out of 100.

$= \frac{64 \div 4}{100 \div 4}$ — Both 64 and 100 divide by 4. Divide top and bottom by the same number, so the value stays the same.

$= \frac{16}{25}$ — 64 ÷ 4 = 16 and 100 ÷ 4 = 25. No number divides both 16 and 25, so this is the simplest form.

Rule

Percentage to decimal: divide by 100. Percentage to fraction: put it over 100, then simplify.

Common mistake

Writing 4% as 0.4. That is 40%. 4% is 0.04.

Key idea

Simplest form means no number divides both top and bottom. 16 and 25 share no factor, so you can stop.

6. Shade a Shape, Find the Rest

لتظليل نسبة مئوية من شكل مقسّم إلى مربعات متساوية: اكتب النسبة ككسر مقامه مئة، ثم حوّله إلى كسر مقامه عدد المربعات بقسمة البسط والمقام على العدد نفسه. البسط الناتج هو عدد المربعات التي تظللها، وأي مربعات تصلح. وفي سؤال «ما النسبة الباقية»: الكل يساوي مئة في المئة، فاطرح الجزء المعروف من مئة. وإذا جاءت الأجزاء بصور مختلفة (كسر ونسبة)، حوّلها كلها إلى نسب مئوية أولًا ثم اجمعها واطرح من مئة. الخطأ الشائع: تظليل عدد مربعات يساوي رقم النسبة نفسه؛ حوّل النسبة أولًا إلى عدد من المربعات الموجودة.

The 1-mark question: a rectangle has 20 equal squares. Shade 45% of it. Find how many squares 45% is.

$45% = \frac{45}{100}$ — Write the percentage as a fraction out of 100.

$= \frac{45 \div 5}{100 \div 5} = \frac{9}{20}$ — The shape has 20 squares, so we want a bottom of 20. 100 ÷ 5 = 20, so divide the top by 5 too.

$shade 9 squares$ — 9 out of 20 squares is 45% of the shape. Any 9 squares will do.

Another 1-mark question: 34% of the people on a bus are standing. What percentage are sitting?

Worked example

$100% - 34% = 66%$ — Everyone on the bus is 100%. Standing and sitting make up the whole, so take the standing part away from 100%.

Harder: 40% of a class walk to school, $\frac{1}{4}$ come by bus, and the rest cycle. What percentage cycle?

$\frac{1}{4} = 25%$ — The parts are in different forms. Change the fraction to a percentage first, so they can be added.

$40% + 25% = 65%$ — Add the parts you know: walk and bus together.

$100% - 65% = 35%$ — The whole class is 100%. Take away the parts you know to find the rest.

Common mistake

Shading 45 squares, or 4 or 5 squares. First change 45% into a number of the 20 squares.

7. Which Method? Read the Question

انظر إلى ما أُعطيت وما يُطلب منك. من عدد عشري إلى نسبة مئوية: اضرب في مئة. من كسر إلى نسبة مئوية: اجعل المقام مئة، أو اقسم البسط على المقام ثم اضرب في مئة. من نسبة مئوية إلى عدد عشري: اقسم على مئة. وإلى كسر في أبسط صورة: ضعها فوق مئة ثم بسّط. لتظليل نسبة من شكل: خذ تلك النسبة من عدد المربعات. وسؤال «ما النسبة التي ليست كذلك»: اطرح من مئة في المئة. أما التعبير عن كمية كنسبة من أخرى، والترتيب، وحساب نسبة من كمية، فلها دروسها الخاصة. تحقّق من الحجم: العدد الأصغر من واحد أقل من مئة في المئة.

Key idea

Check the size. A number less than 1 must be less than 100%. Half is 50%, so $\frac{3}{8}$ must be a bit less than 50%.
