Inverse Proportion in Real Life
1. What Inverse Proportion Means
Two amounts are in inverse proportion when more of one means less of the other. More workers finish a job in fewer days.
| Workers | Days |
| 2 | 12 |
| 3 | 8 |
| 4 | 6 |
| 6 | 4 |
Rule
Multiply the two amounts: you always get the same answer. Here every row gives 24 days of work. That total is the size of the job.
Key idea
Double the workers and the days halve. In direct proportion, both would double.
2. Workers and Days
The 2-mark question: "6 workers take 10 days. How long would 4 workers take?" Find the total job first, then share it out.
Worked example
- 1
— The whole job: 6 workers for 10 days is 60 days of work. Multiply first, because the size of the job never changes.
- 2
— Now 4 workers share the same 60 days of work, so divide by 4. Fewer workers, so more days: 15 is more than 10.
Part (b) often goes the other way: how many workers to finish in 5 days?
Worked example
- 1
— The job is still 60 days of work. To fit it into 5 days, divide by 5 to get the number of workers.
- 2
— Check by multiplying back: 12 workers for 5 days is the same 60, so the answer is right.
Common mistake
Working out days. That is direct proportion. Fewer workers must take longer, not less time.
Key idea
Write the 60 down. One mark is for the total job and one for the answer, so the working still scores if the last step slips.
3. Speed and Time
The 2-mark question: the same journey at a different speed. The distance stays the same, so a faster speed means less time.
Worked example
- 1
— The distance: 3 hours at 80 km/h. Time × speed gives distance, and the trip is the same length at any speed.
- 2
— Time = distance ÷ speed, so divide by the new speed. Slower than 80 km/h, so it takes longer: 4 hours, not 3.
- 3
— Speed = distance ÷ time, so divide by 2.5 hours. Less time needs a faster speed: 96 is more than 80.
Common mistake
Working out hours. Going slower cannot take less time. Check the direction.
4. Food That Must Last
The 3-mark question: food for some animals lasts a number of days. More animals eat it faster, so it lasts fewer days.
Worked example
- 1
— The hay: 12 horses for 20 days is 240 horse days. Multiply first, because the amount of hay does not change.
- 2
— Share the same hay among 15 horses, so divide by 15. More horses, so it lasts fewer days: 16, not 20.
Harder: after 5 days, 3 more horses arrive. Only the food that is left is shared.
Worked example
- 1
— After 5 days, the 12 horses still had 15 days of hay left.
- 2
— The hay left: 12 horses for those 15 days is 180 horse days. Only this is shared from now on.
- 3
— The number of horses eating from now on.
- 4
— Share only the hay left among 15 horses, so divide by 15.
- 5
— If the question asks how long the hay lasted altogether, add back the first 5 days.
Common mistake
Sharing all 240 among 15 horses after the change. The first 5 days of hay are already eaten.
5. One Formula for Every Question
Every question in this lesson uses one rule. Textbooks often print it as a formula:
Formula
and are the pair you are given (for example 9 workers and 8 days). and are the new pair, where one of them is unknown. Both pairs multiply to the same total job.
9 workers take 8 days. How long would 6 workers take?
Worked example
- 1
— Write the rule first. It shows the examiner your method.
- 2
— Put in the numbers. d is the unknown number of days for 6 workers.
- 3
— 9 × 8 = 72. This is the total job, 72 days of work.
- 4
— Divide both sides by 6 to get d alone.
- 5
— Check the direction: fewer workers, so more days. It makes sense.
Key idea
Some books write it in one line: . Multiply the old days by old workers ÷ new workers. The fraction is the opposite way up to direct proportion.
6. When the Answer Is Not Whole
Sometimes the division does not come out whole. Then think about what the answer means before you round.
1. People: round up. 5 builders take 18 days. How many builders are needed to finish in 8 days?
Worked example
- 1
— The whole job: 90 days of work.
- 2
— Divide by the 8 days to find the number of builders.
- 3
— You cannot have a quarter of a builder, so 11.25 is impossible. 11 builders would take days, too long, so round up to 12.
2. Full days: round down. Food for 7 dogs lasts 20 days. For how many full days does it feed 9 dogs?
Worked example
- 1
— The food: 140 dog days.
- 2
— Share it among 9 dogs.
- 3
— On day 16 the food runs out part way, so only 15 full days. Round down here.
Common mistake
Rounding 11.25 to 11 builders because it is nearer. Ask: would 11 finish in time? No, so you need 12.
7. Two Things Change at Once
Some questions change two things at once: more machines and more items. Find the work done by one machine in one hour first.
4 machines make 600 bottles in 5 hours. How long do 5 machines take to make 1200 bottles?
Worked example
- 1
— 4 machines for 5 hours is 20 machine hours of work, and that made 600 bottles.
- 2
— Each machine makes 30 bottles in one hour. Divide the bottles by the machine hours.
- 3
— 1200 bottles need 40 machine hours of work.
- 4
— 5 machines share the 40 machine hours, so divide by 5.
Key idea
Check each change on its own. Twice the bottles needs more time; more machines need less time. 8 hours fits both.
8. Which Method? Read the Question
Ask yourself: if one amount goes up, does the other go down? If yes, multiply to find the total, then divide.
| You see | You do |
| more workers, fewer days | workers × days, then divide |
| same trip, a new speed | distance first, then divide |
| food lasts, more animals | the total food, then divide |
| some join part way | share only what is left |
| answer is not whole | round up for people, down for full days |
| two things change | find one machine's work in one hour |
| more of one, more of the other | Direct Proportion in Real Life |
| a formula with a constant k | Inverse Proportion: y = k/x |
Key idea
Check the direction: fewer workers must mean more days. If your answer goes the wrong way, you used direct proportion.
