1. What a Linear Sequence Is

A sequence is a list of numbers that follows a rule. In a linear sequence you add (or take away) the same number every time.

Example

: add 5 each time. The 5 is the common difference.

Rule

The rule from one term to the next is the term-to-term rule. The rule that gives any term from its position n is the nth term.

Key idea

Always find the difference first. Almost every question here starts with it.

2. The Next Term, and Why

The 1-mark questions ask for the next term, then how you found it. The explanation is a mark too.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: find the next term. Start by looking at how each term changes to the next.

  2. 2

    — Take each term from the one after it. The gap is 7.

  3. 3

    — Check the other gaps. They are all 7, so the rule is “add 7”.

  4. 4

    — Add 7 to the last term. The next term is 34.

Write this

“Add 7 to the previous term.”

Not this

“It goes up” or “the difference is 7”. Say what you do to each term, and by how much.

Common mistake

Missing a decreasing sequence. In 50, 43, 36, 29 the difference is −7, so the next term is 29 − 7 = 22.

3. Finding the nth Term

“Find an expression for the nth term” is worth 2 marks. Two steps: the difference, then the adjustment.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: find the nth term. Find the gap first, like the last card.

  2. 2

    — 8 − 3 = 5, and every gap is 5.

  3. 3

    — The difference goes in front of n. Why? When n goes up by 1, 5n goes up by 5, just like the sequence.

  4. 4

    — Write out 5n for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, under the sequence.

  5. 5

    — Compare the two rows: each term is 2 less than the 5n above it.

  6. 6

    — So take 2 away from 5n.

  7. 7

    — Check with n = 2. You get 8, the 2nd term, so the answer is right.

Example

Going down works the same way. For the difference is −6, so start with −6n. For n = 1 that gives −6, and . So the nth term is .

Key idea

Always write the difference × n part. If the number after it is wrong, an answer like 5n + 3 still earns 1 of the 2 marks.

Common mistake

Writing “n = 5n − 2”. That says something else. Write “nth term = 5n − 2”, or just 5n − 2.

4. Shortcut: a + (n − 1)d

Many textbooks print one formula for the nth term. It gives the same answer as the last card, so use whichever you prefer.

Formula

is the first term. is the common difference, with its sign (negative if the sequence goes down). is the position. It is because from the 1st term to the nth term there are n − 1 gaps.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: find the nth term.

  2. 2

    — The first term is 9, and 13 − 9 = 4.

  3. 3

    — Put a and d into the formula.

  4. 4

    — Expand the bracket: 4 × n = 4n and 4 × (−1) = −4.

  5. 5

    — Collect the numbers: 9 − 4 = 5.

  6. 6

    — Check with n = 1. You get 9, the first term.

Going down. Keep the minus on d and put it in a bracket.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: find the nth term.

  2. 2

    — It goes down by 3, so d = −3.

  3. 3

    — Put a and d in. The bracket keeps the minus safe.

  4. 4

    — Expand: (−3) × n = −3n and (−3) × (−1) = +3, because minus times minus is plus.

  5. 5

    — Collect the numbers: 50 + 3 = 53. Check n = 1: 53 − 3 = 50.

Common mistake

Using n instead of n − 1. 9 + 4n gives 13 for the 1st term, not 9.

5. Using the nth Term

Once you have the nth term, you can find any term, and test whether a number is in the sequence. Here the nth term is .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The 1st term: put n = 1. Multiply first, then take 2.

  2. 2

    — Do the same with n = 2 and n = 3. The first three terms are 3, 8, 13.

  3. 3

    — The 20th term: put n = 20. 5 × 20 = 100, then 100 − 2 = 98.

Is 123 in the sequence?

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Set the nth term equal to the number. If n comes out whole, 123 is a term.

  2. 2

    — Add 2 to both sides.

  3. 3

    — Divide both sides by 5. 25 is a whole number, so yes: 123 is the 25th term.

  4. 4

    — Now test 150 the same way.

  5. 5

    — Add 2 to both sides.

  6. 6

    — Divide by 5. There is no 30.4th term, so 150 is not in the sequence.

Key idea

“Explain why 150 cannot be a term” has a quicker reason too. The terms 3, 8, 13, 18, … always end in 3 or 8, and 150 ends in 0. In 2, 8, 14, 20, … every term is even, so an odd number can never appear. Either reason earns the mark.

The first term greater than 100

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Write it as an inequality: the term must be more than 100.

  2. 2

    — Add 2 to both sides.

  3. 3

    — Divide both sides by 5.

  4. 4

    — n must be a whole number, so take the next one up: 21. Rounding down to 20 would be too small.

  5. 5

    — Put n = 21 back in. Check: n = 20 gives 98, which is not more than 100. So the answer is 103.

6. From Two Terms You Know

Some questions give two terms, not the start of the sequence. Count the steps between them, then share out the gap.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: find the difference and the first term.

  2. 2

    — From the 3rd term to the 7th term you add the difference 4 times.

  3. 3

    — Over those 4 steps the terms grew by 20.

  4. 4

    — Every step is the same size, so share the 20 equally. The difference is 5.

  5. 5

    — Go back one step from the 3rd term: take 5 away.

  6. 6

    — Back one more step. The first term is 1.

  7. 7

    — Check: the 3rd term is 11 and the 7th is 31. Now the nth term is 5n − 4.

Common mistake

Dividing 20 by 7. Count the gaps between the two terms (7 − 3 = 4), not the position of the last one.

A term far along. The 25th term of 5, 12, 19, … is 173. Find the 27th term.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Find the difference from the terms you are given.

  2. 2

    — The 27th term is 2 steps after the 25th.

  3. 3

    — Add the difference once for each step. The 27th term is 187.

  4. 4

    — Going back works too: the 23rd term is 2 steps before, so take 7 off twice.

7. Which Method? Read the Question

Find the difference first, then read what is asked.
