Natural Numbers

Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580

1. What a Natural Number Is

Natural numbers are the counting numbers: They go on for ever. A number is natural if it passes three tests.

TestFails it
Whole: no decimal part
Not negative
Not zero

A natural number can wear a disguise. Work out its value first, then test it.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Work out the value first: 5 × 5 = 25, so √25 = 5. It is whole and positive, so it is natural.

  2. 2

    — A fraction line means divide. 18 ÷ 6 = 3 with nothing left over, so this is natural too.

  3. 3

    — Squaring means multiply the number by itself. Keep the −2 in brackets so the minus is not lost.

  4. 4

    — Minus times minus is plus, so the answer is 4. The minus has gone, so this is natural.

  5. 5

    — 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5. It has a decimal part, so it fails the whole-number test: not natural.

Common mistake

Judging by the look. looks like a fraction but it is 3. In this course the natural numbers start at 1, so 0 is not one of them.

Key idea

Odd and even follow the same idea: only whole numbers can be odd or even. Even ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8; odd ends in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9. So 2.7 and are neither, because they are not whole.

2. Counting the Natural Numbers in a Range

The 1-mark question: how many natural numbers lie between two values, or list the ones that fit a rule. Write them out and count.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: n is bigger than 3.2 and smaller than 8.7. Neither end is a whole number.

  2. 2

    — The first whole number above 3.2 is 4. 3 is too small, because 3 < 3.2.

  3. 3

    — The last whole number below 8.7 is 8. 9 is too big, because 9 > 8.7.

  4. 4

    — Write out every whole number from 4 to 8, so none is missed.

  5. 5

    — Count the list. There are 5 natural numbers.

From 12 to 40, with both ends included, there are too many to write. Use the shortcut.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. Both ends count, but writing 29 numbers out is slow and easy to get wrong.

  2. 2

    — Last minus first gives 28. This counts the gaps between the numbers, not the numbers.

  3. 3

    — There is always one more number than gaps, so add 1. There are 29 numbers.

Some questions give a rule instead of a range. Start at 1 and test each number until one fails.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: which natural numbers have a square less than 30? Start at 1, the first natural number.

  2. 2

    — Square each one in turn. All are less than 30, so 1, 2 and 3 fit.

  3. 3

    — Still less than 30, so 4 and 5 fit too.

  4. 4

    — 36 is more than 30, so 6 fails. Bigger numbers give bigger squares, so you can stop here.

  5. 5

    — The answer: five natural numbers.

Common mistake

Answering 28 for 12 to 40. Last minus first counts the gaps. Add 1 to count the numbers themselves.

3. Always Natural? Add, Take, Times, Divide

The 1-mark question: is the answer always a natural number, sometimes, or never? Try two natural numbers, like 5 and 8, in both orders.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Add: the total of two counting numbers is bigger than both, so adding is always natural.

  2. 2

    — Times: this is 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8, just repeated adding, so it is always natural too.

  3. 3

    — Take away, bigger minus smaller: 3 is natural.

  4. 4

    — Now the other order. Taking a bigger number away goes below zero, and −3 is not natural.

  5. 5

    — Divide: 40 ÷ 8 = 5 exactly, so this time the answer is natural.

  6. 6

    — But 8 ÷ 5 leaves a decimal. 1.6 is not whole, so dividing only sometimes works.

Rule

Adding or multiplying two natural numbers always gives a natural number. Taking away or dividing only sometimes does.

Common mistake

Saying take away never works. is natural, so the answer is sometimes, not never.

4. Big Numbers in Words and Figures

A common 1-mark question: write a big whole number in words, or turn the words back into figures. Split the digits into groups of three, counting from the right.

Rule

Groups of three, from the right: ones, then thousands, then millions. Every group after the first must have exactly three digits.

1. Figures to words:

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. Count three digits in from the right. That splits it into 305 and 040.

  2. 2

    — The left group is the thousands. Read it, then say thousand: three hundred and five thousand.

  3. 3

    — The right group is read on its own. 040 is forty: the 0 at the front only holds a place, so you say nothing for it.

  4. 4

    — Join the parts: three hundred and five thousand and forty. Say “and” before a last part under 100.

2. Words to figures: two million, seventy thousand and six

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Millions come first, so write 2. Two groups of three digits must follow it.

  2. 2

    — Seventy thousand fills the thousands group. Seventy is 70, so write 070: the 0 in front keeps three digits.

  3. 3

    — Six fills the last group. Write 006, again three digits.

  4. 4

    — The answer. Check: a number from one million up to ten million has 7 digits.

Common mistake

Writing 2 70 6 or 2 706. Each group after the millions needs three digits, so fill the gaps with zeros.

Key idea

The same groups tell you what a digit is worth. In 2 070 006 the 7 is in the ten thousands place, so it is worth 70 000, not 7.

5. Which Method? Read the Question

The words in the question tell you which test to use.

You seeYou do
Which are natural numbers?work out each value, then test
How many between two values?list them, or last minus first plus 1
Always, sometimes or never?try two numbers, both orders
Write in words or in figuressplit into groups of three from the right

Negative numbersDirected Numbers

Key idea

For always or never, one example that fails is enough to say it is not always true.
