1. Number Review: What Comes Up

This review mixes the short number questions from the exam. Most are worth 1 mark each, so speed and the right word matter.

Each card recaps one type and names the full lesson to go back to if you get stuck.

WordMeans
Evenends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8
Oddends in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9
Factor of 36divides 36 exactly
Multiple of 9in the 9 times table
Primeexactly two factors: 1 and itself
Squarea number times itself
Cubea number times itself, times itself again

Memory trick

Factor is small, it fits into the number. Multiple is big, it comes out of the times table.

2. Pick From the List

The 1-mark question: a list of numbers, then “write down the prime number” or “a factor of 36”. Test each number against the word.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The list. Take one word from the question at a time and test every number against it.

  2. 2

    — Prime: only 1 and 7 divide it. Exactly two factors is what prime means.

  3. 3

    — 25 is 5 times itself, so it is the square number.

  4. 4

    — 27 is 3 times itself, times itself again, so it is the cube number.

  5. 5

    — 12 goes into 36 exactly, with nothing left over, so 12 is a factor of 36. (18 works too: 36 ÷ 18 = 2.)

  6. 6

    — 27 is in the 9 times table, so it is a multiple of 9. (18 = 9 × 2 works too. Write just one.)

Common mistake

Picking 21 as prime because it is odd. , so it is not prime. Full lessons: Integers, Prime Numbers, Square Numbers, Cube Numbers.

3. Fill In the Word

The 1-mark question: pick a word from a box to finish a sentence, like “125 is the ___ of 5”. Work out the link between the two numbers.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — 5 times itself, times itself again, makes 125. That is a cube, so 125 is the cube of 5.

  2. 2

    — 8 goes into 56 exactly, 7 times. So 8 is a factor of 56.

  3. 3

    — 56 is in the 8 times table, so 56 is a multiple of 8. The small number is the factor, the big one the multiple.

  4. 4

    — 6 times itself makes 36, so 36 is the square of 6.

Common mistake

Writing “square” for 216 and 6. , but , so 216 is the cube of 6.

4. Two Numbers With a Sum or Difference

The 1-mark question: from a list, find two numbers that add to a total, or have a given difference. Use the last digits to narrow it down.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The list. Find two numbers with a sum of 51, then two with a difference of 32.

  2. 2

    — The two last digits must add to something ending in 1. Only 4 + 7 = 11 does, so try 14 and 37.

  3. 3

    — Add to check. It makes exactly 51, so the answer is 14 and 37.

  4. 4

    — Difference means bigger minus smaller. Add 32 to each number and look for the answer in the list: 14 + 32 = 46 is there.

  5. 5

    — Check by subtracting: bigger minus smaller is 32. So the answer is 14 and 46.

Common mistake

For a difference, adding the two numbers. Difference means bigger minus smaller: . Full lesson: Integers.

5. Explain or Show

The 1 or 2-mark question: show a claim is wrong, or use a calculation you are given. Write a sum and a sentence.

Sam says two odd numbers always add to an odd number. One example that breaks it is enough.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Pick two small odd numbers. Small numbers keep the sum easy.

  2. 2

    — Add them, as the claim says.

  3. 3

    — 8 ends in 8, so it is even, not odd. Write: “3 + 5 = 8, which is even, so Sam is wrong.”

Lee says a prime number times 3 is always odd.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Claims about primes often break with 2. It is prime, and it is the only even prime.

  2. 2

    — Multiply, as the claim says.

  3. 3

    — 6 is not odd, so Lee is wrong. Any other prime would not work here: odd × 3 is odd.

Key idea

Stuck on a claim about primes or even numbers? Try 2 first.

You are told . Work out .

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The fact you are given. Use it, so you do not need a new long multiplication.

  2. 2

    — Turn the division round. 14 212 shared into 34 gives 418, so 34 lots of 418 make 14 212.

  3. 3

    — 35 lots is 34 lots plus one more lot of 418.

  4. 4

    — Swap in the fact from the line above.

  5. 5

    — Add: 14 212 + 418 = 14 630. Writing the add is what earns the marks.

Common mistake

Adding 1 or 35 instead of 418. One more lot of 418 means add 418.

6. Number Puzzles: Pass Every Test

The 2-mark puzzle: find numbers that pass several tests at once. Start with the rarest kind of number, then test its neighbours.

A, B and C are three whole numbers in a row. A is a cube, B is a square, C is a multiple of 5, and A + B + C is less than 40.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Cubes are the rarest, so list them first. 64 is too big, because the three numbers must add to less than 40.

  2. 2

    — 2 is not a square (1 × 1 = 1, 2 × 2 = 4), so 1 fails.

  3. 3

    — 9 is a square, so B = 9 passes.

  4. 4

    — 10 is in the 5 times table, so C passes too.

  5. 5

    — Check the last test: 27 is less than 40. So A = 8, B = 9, C = 10.

Key idea

Write your numbers even if you are unsure. Numbers that pass any two of the tests can still earn 1 of the 2 marks.

Make a 2-digit number ending in 1 that is not prime.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Do not guess. These fail, because each has only 1 and itself as factors.

  2. 2

    — 21 splits as 3 × 7, so it has more than two factors. It is not prime. So 21 is an answer.

Common mistake

Picking a number because it “looks” not prime. Always show it splits, like 21 = 3 × 7.

7. Numbers in Words and Figures

The 1-mark question: write a number given in words using digits. Work in groups of three digits, and put a 0 in any empty place.

Write three million, forty thousand, six hundred and five in figures.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — “Three million” fills the millions. Two groups of three digits must follow it.

  2. 2

    — “Forty thousand” fills the thousands group. It has no hundred thousands, so that place gets a 0.

  3. 3

    — “Six hundred and five” fills the last group. There are no tens, so the middle digit is 0.

  4. 4

    — Read it back to check: three million, forty thousand, six hundred and five. It matches.

Common mistake

Writing 340 605. Without the 0s the digits slide into the wrong places, and the number comes out far too small.

8. Money and Groups: Show Each Sum

The 3-mark question: work out a shop bill, then the change. Write one sum per line, because each line earns marks.

Pens cost $1.85 each and notebooks cost $2.40 each. Lina buys 3 pens and 2 notebooks. How much change does she get from a $20 note?

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Cost of the pens: 3 lots of $1.85.

  2. 2

    — Cost of the notebooks: 2 lots of $2.40.

  3. 3

    — Add the two costs to get the whole bill: $10.35.

  4. 4

    — Change is what you paid minus the bill. Lina gets $9.65.

Key idea

Show every line. If the last sum slips, the lines above still earn up to 2 of the 3 marks.

230 students go on a trip. Each bus holds 48 students. How many buses are needed?

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Share the students into buses of 48.

  2. 2

    — Test 4 buses: they hold only 192, so 38 students would be left behind. 4 is impossible.

  3. 3

    — Round up, not down. A part-full bus is still a bus: 5 × 48 = 240 seats.

Common mistake

Writing $4.8 for money. Money always has 2 decimal places: $4.80.

9. Which Method? Read the Question
