1. What a Percentage Change Is
A percentage increase or decrease changes an amount by a part of itself. You can do it in one multiplication. That number is called the multiplier.
| Change | Multiplier |
| up 15% | |
| up 7.5% | |
| down 20% | |
| down 3% |
Rule
Start from 100%. Add the increase or take away the decrease. Then write it as a decimal.
Key idea
An increase has a multiplier bigger than 1. A decrease has a multiplier smaller than 1.
2. Increase or Decrease by a Percentage
The 3-mark question: a price, a wage or a count goes up or down by a percentage. Find the new amount.
Textbooks write the whole method as one formula:
Formula
is the percentage change. Use + for an increase and − for a decrease. The bracket is the multiplier.
Worked example
- 1
— The question: 2400 goes up by 15%. We want the new amount, not just the increase.
- 2
— The new amount is the 100% you started with plus the 15% added on.
- 3
— Divide by 100 to turn 115% into a decimal. This is the multiplier.
- 4
— Multiply the original by the multiplier. One multiplication gives the new amount.
A decrease works the same way. A $60 price has 20% off.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. “Off” means the price goes down, so this is a decrease.
- 2
— After 20% is taken off, you keep 80% of the price.
- 3
— Divide by 100 to get the multiplier. It is less than 1 because the price goes down.
- 4
— Multiply the original price by the multiplier. The sale price is $48.
Common mistake
Multiplying by 0.15 only finds the increase, 360. The question wants the new amount, 2760.
3. Finding the Percentage Change
The 4-mark question: a value goes from one number to another. Find the percentage increase or decrease. Percentage change =
Formula
The change is how much it went up or down. The original is the value you started with.
Worked example
- 1
— The question: the price went up from $80 to $92. Find the percentage increase.
- 2
— Find the change first: new minus original. The price went up by $12.
- 3
— Divide the change by the original, $80. A percentage change is always compared with where you started.
- 4
— Multiply by 100 to turn the decimal into a percentage. So it is a 15% increase.
Common mistake
Dividing by the new value: 12 ÷ 92 gives about 13%, which is wrong. Always divide by where you started.
Key idea
Quick check: 92 ÷ 80 = 1.15, which is the multiplier for a 15% increase.
A decrease, to 3 significant figures. A ticket falls from $7.40 to $6.85. Find the percentage decrease.
Worked example
- 1
— For a decrease, take the new price from the original, so the change is positive.
- 2
— Divide by the original, $7.40. Keep every digit on your calculator for now.
- 3
— Multiply by 100 to make it a percentage.
- 4
— Round only at the end. The first 3 significant figures are 7, 4, 3, and the next digit, 2, rounds down.
Common mistake
Getting −7.43%? You worked out new − original. The minus only means it went down, so write “7.43% decrease”.
Key idea
Show the change and the division as separate lines. Most of the marks are for that working, so you still score if you slip on the calculator.
4. Two Changes in a Row
The 3-mark question: two changes, one after the other. Find the final amount or the overall percentage change.
Worked example
- 1
— The first change is an increase, so its multiplier is 1.2.
- 2
— The second change is a decrease. It acts on the new amount, so it gets its own multiplier.
- 3
— One change after the other means multiplying by both. Multiply the two multipliers to get one multiplier for the whole journey.
- 4
— You end with 90% of what you started with.
- 5
— 10% has been lost, so the overall change is a 10% decrease.
- 6
— If the question gives a starting amount, say $400, multiply it by 0.9 to get the final amount.
Common mistake
Adding the percentages: 20 take away 25 gives a 5% fall. Wrong, because the second change is a percentage of the new amount.
Key idea
Up 10% then down 10% is not a return to the start: , so you end 1% lower.
Key idea
The same works when two lengths change. A rectangle's length goes up 10% and its width goes down 30%: the area is multiplied by , so the area falls by 23%.
5. Finding an Unknown Percentage
Some questions give you the result and ask for the percentage that caused it. Find the amounts first, then use change ÷ original × 100.
Making two amounts equal. Ali earns $2500 a month and Sara earns $2400. Ali gets a 6% rise. After their rises they earn the same. What percentage rise did Sara get?
Worked example
- 1
— First find Ali's new pay. A 6% rise means multiply by 1.06.
- 2
— They now earn the same, so Sara's new pay is also $2650.
- 3
— Sara's change: her new pay minus her original pay.
- 4
— Divide by Sara's original pay, $2400, not Ali's, because it is her rise.
- 5
— Round to 3 significant figures. Sara got a 10.4% rise.
An unknown change after known ones. A car is worth $20 000. It loses 15% in year 1 and 10% in year 2. In year 3 its value rises by x% to $16 218. Find x.
Worked example
- 1
— Apply the two known changes: down 15% is × 0.85, down 10% is × 0.9.
- 2
— This is the value after two years, just before the unknown change.
- 3
— Divide the final value by the value before the change. This gives the third multiplier.
- 4
— Multiply by 100: the value became 106% of what it was.
- 5
— Take away the 100% it started with. So x = 6.
Common mistake
Answering 1.06% or 106%. The multiplier 1.06 means a 6% increase.
Key idea
Harder questions give two equal unknown rises in a row. Then the two multipliers are the same, so their product is a square. If it is 1.1025, square root it: , a 5% rise each time.
6. Which Method? Read the Question
Find the key words. They tell you which method to use.
| You see | You do |
| increase by 8% | multiply by 1.08 |
| reduced by 15%, 15% off | multiply by 0.85 |
| percentage increase from one value to another | change ÷ original × 100 |
| goes up, then goes down | multiply the two multipliers |
| find the percentage that makes them equal, or x% | find the amounts first, then change ÷ original × 100 |
| by 5% each year for 3 years | Compound Interest |
| the price before the change | Reverse Percentages |
| find 15% of an amount | Calculating a Percentage of a Quantity |
| one amount as a percentage of another | Expressing One Quantity as a Percentage |
