1. What a Reverse Percentage Is

You are given the amount AFTER a percentage change. You must find the amount BEFORE it: the original.

The original is always 100%. Work out what percentage you are holding now, then write it as a multiplier.

ChangeYou now hold
25% off75%, so
up 20%120%, so
down 6%94%, so
up 8%108%, so

Rule

Going forwards you multiply by the multiplier. Going backwards you divide by it.

2. Undo a Decrease

The 3-mark question: a sale price, a new salary or a value after it went down. Find the normal price or the value before.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: after 25% off, a price is $51. The original is always 100%. 25% was taken off, so $51 is 75% of the original.

  2. 2

    — 75% as a decimal is 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75. This is the number the original was multiplied by.

  3. 3

    — Write the equation: the original times the multiplier gave the sale price. This line alone earns a mark for working.

  4. 4

    — Multiplying by 0.75 got you to $51, so divide by 0.75 to go back. Dividing undoes multiplying.

  5. 5

    — The normal price. It is bigger than $51, which makes sense: the price went down to reach $51.

  6. 6

    — Multiply forwards. You get the sale price back, so $68 is right.

Common mistake

Adding 25% of $51 back on gives $63.75. Wrong: the 25% was taken from the original, not from $51.

Key idea

Asked for the discount? Find the original first, then subtract: 68 − 51 = $17.

3. Undo an Increase

The 3-mark question: a price or salary went up, and you know the new amount. Find the amount before the increase.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: a salary went up 20% to $31 200. The old salary is 100%. 20% was added, so $31 200 is 120% of it.

  2. 2

    — 120% as a decimal is 120 ÷ 100 = 1.2. A multiplier bigger than 1 means an increase.

  3. 3

    — Write the equation: the old salary times 1.2 gave the new salary.

  4. 4

    — Divide by 1.2 to undo the multiply and go back to the start.

  5. 5

    — The old salary. It is smaller than $31 200, which makes sense before a rise.

  6. 6

    — Multiply forwards. You get the new salary back, so the answer is right.

Common mistake

Taking 20% off $31 200 gives $24 960. Wrong: the 20% was worked out on the old salary, not the new one.

Key idea

If the question says 3 significant figures, round only at the very end.

4. No Calculator? Find 10% First

On a non-calculator paper, dividing by 0.7 is hard. Find 10% first, then build up to 100%.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: after 30% off, a coat costs $63. So $63 is 70% of the normal price.

  2. 2

    — Write down what you know. This is the line that earns the first mark.

  3. 3

    — 70% is 7 lots of 10%, so divide by 7 to find 10%.

  4. 4

    — 100% is 10 lots of 10%, so multiply by 10. This is the normal price.

  5. 5

    — 30% of $90 is $27, and $90 − $27 = $63. It works.

Key idea

If the percentage is not a multiple of 10, find 1% instead. If 104% is $624, then 1% = 624 ÷ 104 = $6, so 100% = 6 × 100 = $600.

Common mistake

Finding 30% of $63 and adding it on. The 30% was taken from the normal price, not from $63.

5. When You Know Part of the Whole

The 2 or 3-mark question: you are told a part and what percentage of the whole it is. Find the whole.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. 91 is only part of the number, so the number must be bigger than 91.

  2. 2

    — 35% as a decimal is 0.35. “35% of” means “0.35 times”.

  3. 3

    — Divide by 0.35 to undo the multiply.

  4. 4

    — The whole number. Check: 0.35 × 260 = 91.

Sometimes you are told the size of the change, not the new amount. Then the change is the part.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: a pay rise of $900 was a 12% rise. The $900 is the 12% itself, not the new salary.

  2. 2

    — 12% as a decimal is 0.12. 12% of the old salary is $900.

  3. 3

    — Divide by 0.12 to undo the multiply.

  4. 4

    — The old salary. Check: 0.12 × 7500 = 900.

  5. 5

    — Only if the question asks for the new salary: add the rise to the old salary.

Common mistake

Multiplying 91 by 0.35 gives 31.85. That makes it smaller, but the whole must be bigger than the part.

Common mistake

Dividing $900 by 1.12 gives $803.57. Wrong: $900 is the 12% rise itself, so divide by 0.12.

6. Two Changes, Then Go Back

The 3-mark question: two changes in a row, and you know the final value. Find the value at the start.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: a price went up 10%, then down 20%, and is now $264. Up 10% means 110%, so the first multiplier is 1.1.

  2. 2

    — Down 20% leaves 80% of the new price, so the second multiplier is 0.8.

  3. 3

    — Multiply the two multipliers. This gives one multiplier that does both changes at once.

  4. 4

    — Write the equation: the start price times 0.88 gave $264.

  5. 5

    — Divide by 0.88 to undo both changes in one go.

  6. 6

    — The start price. Check: 300 × 1.1 = 330, then 330 × 0.8 = 264.

Common mistake

Treating it as a 10% fall and dividing by 0.9 gives $293.33. Multiply the two multipliers instead.

Key idea

The same works for “percent of what is left”. 20% of some coins are gold, 25% of the rest are silver, and the other 120 are copper. Copper is 0.8 × 0.75 = 0.6 of all the coins, so there are 120 ÷ 0.6 = 200 coins.

7. Shares Linked by Percentages

Some questions give a total and compare each person's share with a percentage. Write every share in terms of one person, then divide.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question: Ali, Bo and Cy share $620. Bo gets 80% of Ali's share. Cy gets 30% more than Ali. Everyone is compared with Ali, so call Ali's share A.

  2. 2

    — 80% of Ali's share is 0.8 times A.

  3. 3

    — 30% more than Ali means 100% + 30% = 130%, which is 1.3 times A.

  4. 4

    — Add the three shares. Together they are 3.1 lots of Ali's share.

  5. 5

    — The three shares make the total, $620. This equation earns a mark for working.

  6. 6

    — Divide by 3.1 to find Ali's share.

  7. 7

    — Bo gets 0.8 × 200 = $160 and Cy gets 1.3 × 200 = $260. They add up to $620.

Common mistake

Dividing $620 by 3 gives $206.67. The shares are not equal, so add the multipliers (3.1) and divide by that.

8. Which Method? Read the Question

Ask yourself: do I know the amount before the change, or after it?
