1. What Probability From a Venn Means

You already know how to fill a Venn diagram. Now one person is chosen at random, and you find the chance they are in some part of it.

Formula

The top is the regions that fit. The bottom is everyone in the box.

Rule

The total is all four regions added, including the number outside both circles.

Key idea

Always answer the probability part, even if you are unsure of your diagram. Examiners usually give the marks for a correct method using your own numbers.

2. Add the Regions That Fit

The most common 2-mark question: find the probability the person is in both, in one set, or in A or B. Find the regions that fit and add them.

50 students: 14 study French only, 8 study both, 11 study Spanish only and 17 study neither.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Add all four regions. Everyone in the box can be chosen, even the 17 outside both circles.

  2. 2

    — “Both” is the overlap only: 8 students.

  3. 3

    — Divide top and bottom by 2. Either form gets the mark.

  4. 4

    — The French circle has two regions: French only and the overlap.

  5. 5

    — 14 + 8 = 22. Then divide top and bottom by 2.

  6. 6

    — “French or Spanish” means in at least one circle: three regions, with the overlap counted once.

  7. 7

    — 14 + 8 + 11 = 33. The 17 outside both circles are left out.

  8. 8

    — “French but not Spanish” is French only. Drop the overlap, because those 8 also study Spanish.

Common mistake

For you add 22 and 19 to get 41. That counts the 8 in both twice. Add the three regions instead: 33.

Key idea

If the diagram shows numbers, not counts, count how many numbers sit in each region first.

3. When the Diagram Shows Numbers

Some diagrams show the numbers themselves, not how many. Then count the numbers in each region before you divide.

ℰ (ξ in Edexcel) = whole numbers 1 to 15. A = multiples of 3. B = odd numbers.

RegionNumbers
A only6, 12
3, 9, 15
B only1, 5, 7, 11, 13
outside both2, 4, 8, 10, 14

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Count every number in the box, outside the circles too. 15 goes on the bottom.

  2. 2

    — The overlap holds the odd multiples of 3. List them, then count: 3 numbers.

  3. 3

    — 3 numbers fit out of 15. Divide top and bottom by 3.

  4. 4

    — “In A but not B” is A only: the multiples of 3 that are even.

  5. 5

    — 2 numbers fit out of 15.

  6. 6

    — Outside both circles: not a multiple of 3 and not odd.

  7. 7

    — 5 numbers fit out of 15. Divide top and bottom by 5.

Common mistake

Adding the numbers: 3 + 9 + 15 = 27. A probability counts how many numbers fit, not what they add up to.

Key idea

Check the counts add back to the total: 2 + 3 + 5 + 5 = 15. If not, a number is missing or written twice.

4. Not in a Set

Back to the 50 students: 14 study French only, 8 study both, 11 study Spanish only and 17 study neither. The 2-mark 'not' question: the person is not in a set, or in neither. "Not in S" is every region outside circle S, and that includes the outside of both circles.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — “Not Spanish” is every region outside circle S: French only and outside both.

  2. 2

    — 14 + 17 = 31. It does not simplify, so leave it.

  3. 3

    — Check another way: all of S is 8 + 11 = 19, so take its share away from 1.

  4. 4

    — “Neither” is outside both circles only: 17 students.

  5. 5

    — In F, or not in S: French only, the overlap and outside. Only Spanish only is left out.

  6. 6

    — 14 + 8 + 17 = 39. Check: 50 − 11 = 39.

Common mistake

Using only the 17 outside for . The 14 who study French only are not in S either.

Key idea

Check with the shortcut: the chance of not S is 1 take away the chance of S.

5. Chosen From One Circle (Extended/Higher)

The 1 or 2-mark twist: "A student who studies French is chosen. Find the probability they also study Spanish." Now you only choose from the French circle, so the bottom gets smaller.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — You choose only from the French students, so the French circle is the new total.

  2. 2

    — Of those 22, the ones who also study Spanish sit in the overlap.

  3. 3

    — 8 who fit, out of the 22 you choose from.

  4. 4

    — Divide top and bottom by 2.

Common mistake

Writing . The words 'a student who studies French' mean you pick from the 22, not the 50.

Key idea

Look for "this person also" or "one of the people who". That is a smaller total. The Conditional Probability lesson does more of this.

6. Three Circles (Extended/Higher)

Three-circle questions work the same way: add the regions that fit, then pick the right total.

80 people say which they play: squash (S), golf (G), bowls (B).

RegionPeople
S only12
G only15
B only9
S and G only6
S and B only4
G and B only8
all three3
none23

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Add all eight regions. Everyone can be chosen, including the 23 in no circle.

  2. 2

    — “Exactly two” is the three regions where only two circles overlap. The centre is left out.

  3. 3

    — 6 + 4 + 8 = 18. Then divide top and bottom by 2.

  4. 4

    — Now a golfer is chosen. Add the four regions inside circle G: the new total.

  5. 5

    — Inside G, the people who also play squash are “S and G only” and the centre.

  6. 6

    — 9 who fit, out of the 32 golfers you choose from.

Common mistake

Adding the centre 3 to “exactly two”. The centre is in all three circles, so it is not exactly two.

Key idea

To fill a three-circle diagram first, see Three-Set Venn Diagrams. Start in the centre and work outwards.

7. Which Method? Read the Question
