1. What Relative Frequency Means
Some spinners and dice are biased: not every outcome is equally likely. Then you cannot count to find a probability. You do an experiment instead.
Formula
A trial is one go: one spin, one roll, one throw.
Worked example
- 1
— The results. The spinner has 4 equal parts and 1 is a star. Each spin is one trial, so there are 80 trials.
- 2
— Put the times it landed on a star over the number of trials.
- 3
— Divide: 22 ÷ 80 = 0.275. This is the relative frequency of a star.
- 4
— A fair spinner lands on the star 1 time in 4. Work it out so you have something to compare with.
- 5
— The two are close, so after 80 spins the spinner looks fair.
From a table. Often the results come in a frequency table and you must count the trials yourself. A 4-sided spinner gave these results.
| Score | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| Frequency | 9 | 14 | 11 | 16 |
Worked example
- 1
— Add all the frequencies. Every spin is counted once, so this is the number of trials.
- 2
— A score of 4 came 16 times. Put that over the trials.
- 3
— 16 ÷ 50 = 0.32. This is the relative frequency of scoring 4.
Common mistake
Dividing by 4, the number of scores. Divide by the total of the frequencies, 50, because that is how many spins there were.
Rule
Relative frequency is an estimate of the probability. More trials give a better estimate.
Key idea
During World War II, the mathematician John Kerrich was held in a camp in Denmark. To pass the time, he and a friend tossed a coin 10,000 times and got 5,067 heads. That is a relative frequency of , very close to .
2. How Many Times? Probability Times Trials
The 2-mark question: "Work out an estimate for the number of times..." Multiply the probability by the number of trials.
Formula
The probability that Sami wins a game is 0.35. He plays 160 games.
Worked example
- 1
— Start with what you know: the chance that Sami wins one game.
- 2
— Each game gives the same chance of a win, so for 160 games multiply by 160.
- 3
— 0.35 × 160 = 56. Sami should win about 56 games.
- 4
— Each game is a win or a loss, so the two chances add to 1. Take 0.35 away from 1.
- 5
— Multiply P(lose) by the 160 games: about 104 losses.
- 6
— Check: the wins and the losses together must make all 160 games.
With a fraction. The probability that Lena wins is . She plays 40 games. Estimate how many she wins.
Worked example
- 1
— Same rule: probability times trials. This time the probability is a fraction.
- 2
— Divide by the bottom number first: one eighth of 40 games is 5 games.
- 3
— Then multiply by the top number: three eighths of 40 is about 15 wins.
Common mistake
Answering 0.35 or 35. The question asks for a number of games, so multiply by 160.
Key idea
An estimate is not a promise. Sami will win about 56 games, maybe 52 or 60.
3. Missing Probability, Then How Many
The 3 or 4-mark question: a table of a biased spinner has gaps. Fill the gap first, then multiply.
| Number | Probability |
| 1 | 0.3 |
| 2 | x |
| 3 | 0.18 |
| 4 | x |
The spinner lands on 2 and on 4 with the same probability. It is spun 150 times. Estimate how often it lands on 4.
Worked example
- 1
— Add the probabilities you know. All four probabilities must add up to 1.
- 2
— Take that from 1. What is left, 0.52, is shared by 2 and 4.
- 3
— 2 and 4 are equally likely, so each one gets half of 0.52.
- 4
— Now probability times trials: expect about 39 of the 150 spins to land on 4.
Common mistake
Stopping at 0.26. That is the probability. The question wants a number of spins.
One is twice another. A team can win, lose or draw. P(win) = 0.16. Losing is twice as likely as drawing. Find P(draw) and P(lose).
Worked example
- 1
— Lose and draw share what is left after winning, because the three add to 1.
- 2
— Losing is twice as likely as drawing. Call the draw x, so the lose is 2x.
- 3
— Together they make the 0.84 that is left. That is 3 equal parts.
- 4
— Divide by 3 to find one part. This is P(draw).
- 5
— Losing is two parts, so P(lose) = 0.56.
- 6
— Check: the three probabilities add to 1.
Common mistake
Halving the 0.84. “Twice as likely” makes 3 equal parts (1 for draw, 2 for lose), so divide by 3, not 2.
Key idea
Write the 1 − (0.3 + 0.18) line. It earns a method mark even if a later number goes wrong.
4. Is It Fair? Is It Biased?
The 1-mark question: "Give a reason why the results show the dice could be biased." Compare what happened with what a fair dice would give.
A dice is rolled 120 times. A six comes up 41 times.
Worked example
- 1
— A fair dice has 6 equally likely faces, so the chance of a six is one in six.
- 2
— Probability times trials: a fair dice gives about 20 sixes in 120 rolls.
- 3
— The relative frequency of a six in the results. A fair dice gives about 0.17.
- 4
— About double what a fair dice gives, so the dice could be biased.
Rule
Give numbers in your reason: "41 sixes, but only about 20 expected."
Show it is fair. A 5-sided spinner is spun 400 times. The scores 1 to 5 come up 78, 83, 79, 81 and 79 times.
Worked example
- 1
— A fair spinner shares the 400 spins equally, so each score should come up about 80 times.
- 2
— Every count is close to 80, so the spinner looks fair. Say so with the numbers.
Common mistake
Trusting a short run. 3 sixes in 10 rolls proves nothing. Use the results with the most trials for the best estimate.
5. From a Sample to a Whole Group
Questions often ask a small group, then ask about a much bigger one. The small group gives a relative frequency, and you use it like a probability.
Formula
The sample is the small group that was asked. The fraction is its relative frequency. The whole group is everyone you want to estimate for.
40 students are asked how they get to school, and 9 of them cycle. There are 1200 students in the school. Estimate how many cycle.
Worked example
- 1
— 9 of the 40 students asked cycle. This is the relative frequency of cycling.
- 2
— Assume the whole school is like the sample, so multiply by the 1200 students.
- 3
— Divide first to keep the numbers small: the school is 30 times as big as the sample.
- 4
— So there are about 30 times as many cyclists: about 270 students.
Key idea
This is usually a 2-mark question. Writing earns a method mark even if the arithmetic slips.
Common mistake
Working out 1200 ÷ 9. The fraction is “9 out of 40”, so it is 9 ÷ 40, then × 1200.
6. Which Method? Read the Question
Look at what the question gives you and what it wants.
| You see | You do |
| Results of an experiment | times it happened over trials |
| Estimate the number of times | probability × trials |
| A table with gaps, then how many | fill from 1, then × trials |
| Is it fair or biased? | compare with the fair expected number |
| A survey of a few, then a big group | sample fraction × size of the big group |
| Know how many and the probability, want the total | Probability from Tables and Charts |
| Equally likely outcomes, no trials | Basic Probability |
| A frequency table or chart | Probability from Tables and Charts |
Key idea
An estimate of how many is a count, so it is bigger than 1. A probability is between 0 and 1.
