1. The Number Families
Numbers come in families, and each family sits inside a bigger one. Together they make the real numbers: every point on the number line.
| Family | Examples |
| Natural: counting numbers | |
| Integer: whole numbers | |
| Rational: can be a fraction | |
| Irrational: cannot |
Worked example
- 1
— Any integer can be written over 1. That makes it one integer over another, so 7 is rational as well as an integer.
- 2
— No fraction times itself makes exactly 2. The decimal never ends and never repeats, so is irrational.
- 3
— Every number is either rational or irrational, never both. Together the two groups fill every point on the number line.
Rule
Natural numbers sit inside the integers. Integers sit inside the rationals. Rationals and irrationals together are the real numbers.
2. Even, Multiples and Factors
The 1-mark question: a list of numbers, then "write down an even number", "a multiple of 7" or "a factor of 30". Test each number in turn.
| Word | Test |
| Even | ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 |
| Multiple of 7 | divides by 7 with nothing left |
| Multiple of 3 (or 9) | its digits add up to a multiple of 3 (or 9) |
| Factor of 30 | divides into 30 exactly |
Worked example
- 1
— The list. Test every number against one word at a time.
- 2
— They end in 6 and 4, so 2 divides them exactly. The rest end in 1, 5, 7 or 9, so they are odd.
- 3
— Both are in the 7 times table. The others leave a remainder when you divide by 7.
- 4
— Add the digits: 1 + 5 = 6, 2 + 4 = 6, 2 + 7 = 9. Each total is in the 3 times table, so the number is too.
- 5
— 2 + 7 = 9, which is in the 9 times table. 15 and 24 only reach 6, so they are not.
- 6
— 30 ÷ 6 = 5 and 30 ÷ 15 = 2, with nothing left. 35 and 49 are bigger than 30, so they cannot be factors.
Common mistake
Mixing up factor and multiple. A factor of 30 is smaller and fits into 30. A multiple of 7 is bigger and comes out of the 7 times table.
3. Squares, Cubes and Primes
The 1-mark question: from the same list, write down a square number, a cube number or a prime number.
| Word | Means |
| Square | a whole number times itself |
| Cube | a whole number times itself, times itself again |
| Prime | exactly two factors: 1 and itself |
Worked example
- 1
— 7 times itself makes 49, so 49 is a square number. No other number in the list is a whole number times itself.
- 2
— 3 times itself, then times 3 again, makes 27, so 27 is a cube number.
- 3
— The only way to make 11 is 1 × 11. It has exactly two factors, so it is prime.
- 4
— They are odd, but they split into smaller numbers. That gives more than two factors, so they are not prime.
Memory trick
Squares to know: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100. Cubes to know: 1, 8, 27, 64, 125. 1 is in both lists, because 1 × 1 = 1 and 1 × 1 × 1 = 1.
Common mistake
Picking an odd number like 15 or 35 as prime. Check for a small factor first: 3, 5 or 7. And 1 is not prime, because it has only one factor. 2 is prime: the only even prime.
4. Rational or Irrational?
Sometimes the list has roots, decimals and in it. Ask one question: can it be written as a fraction of two integers?
Worked example
- 1
— 0.6 means 6 tenths. The decimal stops, so it is a fraction: rational.
- 2
— 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333… The 3 repeats for ever, and a repeating decimal can always be written as a fraction: rational.
- 3
— 9 = 3 × 3 is a square number, so the root comes out as a whole number. : rational.
- 4
— 10 is not a square number, so the root does not come out. The decimal never ends or repeats: irrational.
Common mistake
Calling every square root irrational. is just 3. Only the root of a number that is not square is irrational.
Key idea
Asked to write down any irrational number, with no list? The root of a number that is not square always works, like or . So does .
5. Work Out the Disguise First
Exam lists hide numbers in disguise: roots that come out, decimals that look like , negatives. Work out what each one really is, then test it.
Worked example
- 1
— The list. Before you test anything, find the true value of each number.
- 2
— 11 × 11 = 121, so this is just 11. It is a natural number, and also a prime.
- 3
— It looks like one, but its value is 11, and 11 is not a whole number times itself. The square number here is 64 = 8 × 8.
- 4
— A decimal that stops is a fraction, so 3.14 is rational. It is only close to , which never ends.
- 5
— The minus sign does not change the test. It is a fraction, so it is rational, but it is not an integer.
- 6
— It is already a fraction of two integers, so it is rational. The decimal repeats for ever, but that does not make it irrational.
- 7
— 50 is not a square number, so the root does not come out. The decimal never ends or repeats: this is the irrational one.
Common mistake
Choosing 3.142 or as the irrational number. Both are only close to . Both are fractions, so both are rational.
6. Which Method? Read the Question
The word in the question tells you which test to use.
| You see | You do |
| An even number | last digit 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 |
| A multiple of 7 | divide by 7, nothing left |
| A multiple of 3 or 9 | add the digits: is the total a multiple of 3 or 9? |
| A factor of 30 | it divides into 30 |
| A square or cube number | is it n × n, or n × n × n? |
| A prime number | only 1 and itself divide it |
| Rational or irrational | can it be a fraction? |
| A root, or a decimal like 3.14 | work out its true value first, then test |
| Any irrational number (no list) | the root of a non-square, like √2, or π |
| More on fractions and decimals | Rational Numbers |
| More on roots and π | Irrational Numbers |
Key idea
Test every number in the list. If the question asks for “a prime number”, one answer is enough: write two and one is wrong, and you can lose the mark. If a later part uses your answers, like adding the two primes, write the primes down first. That line can earn a mark even if the sum goes wrong.
