Reciprocals

1. What a Reciprocal Is

مقلوب العدد هو الواحد مقسومًا على ذلك العدد. ومع الكسر يعني ذلك ببساطة أن تقلبه: يصبح البسط مقامًا والمقام بسطًا. والعدد الصحيح مقلوبه كسر بسطه واحد، والكسر الذي بسطه واحد مقلوبه عدد صحيح. القاعدة المهمة: حاصل ضرب أي عدد في مقلوبه يساوي واحدًا دائمًا، وهذه طريقة ممتازة للتحقق. والصفر هو العدد الوحيد الذي ليس له مقلوب، لأننا لا نستطيع قسمة الواحد على الصفر.

The reciprocal of a number is 1 divided by that number. For a fraction, that just means turning it upside down.

Rule

A number times its reciprocal is always 1. For example $\frac{3}{4} \times \frac{4}{3} = \frac{12}{12} = 1$ .

Key idea

Zero is the only number with no reciprocal, because you cannot divide 1 by 0.

2. Whole Numbers and Fractions

سؤال الدرجة الواحدة: اكتب مقلوب عدد. إذا كان عددًا صحيحًا فاكتبه أولًا ككسر مقامه واحد، لأن أي عدد مقسوم على واحد يساوي نفسه، ثم اقلبه بتبديل البسط والمقام. وإذا كان كسرًا فاقلبه مباشرة. تحقق دائمًا: العدد في مقلوبه يجب أن يساوي واحدًا. وإذا كان الناتج كسرًا بسطه أكبر من مقامه فيمكنك تركه هكذا أو تحويله إلى عدد كسري، وكلاهما مقبول. الخطأ الشائع تغيير الإشارة: مقلوب العدد السالب يبقى سالبًا، لأن حاصل ضرب سالب في موجب لا يمكن أن يساوي واحدًا.

The 1-mark question: “Write down the reciprocal of 8.” Write the whole number as a fraction over 1, then flip it.

Worked example

$8 = \frac{8}{1}$ — Write the whole number as a fraction. Any number divided by 1 is itself, so 8 is 8 over 1.

$\frac{1}{8}$ — Flip it: the top and the bottom swap places. This is the reciprocal.

$8 \times \frac{1}{8} = \frac{8}{8} = 1 ✓$ — Check: a number times its reciprocal must give 1. It does, so the answer is right.

A fraction works the same way. Only the top and the bottom swap places.

Worked example

$\frac{2}{7}$ — The question. The top is 2 and the bottom is 7.

$\frac{7}{2}$ — Flip it: the top goes down and the bottom goes up.

$\frac{2}{7} \times \frac{7}{2} = \frac{14}{14} = 1 ✓$ — Check: the product is 1, so the flip is right.

$\frac{7}{2} = 3 \frac{1}{2}$ — You may leave it as 7 over 2, or change it to a mixed number: 7 ÷ 2 = 3 remainder 1. Both are accepted.

Common mistake

Changing the sign. The reciprocal of $- \frac{3}{5}$ is $- \frac{5}{3}$ . It stays negative, because $(- \frac{3}{5}) \times (- \frac{5}{3}) = 1$ , and a negative times a positive can never give 1.

3. Mixed Numbers and Decimals

هنا يأتي السؤال بعدد كسري أو بكسر عشري. القاعدة: حوّله أولًا إلى كسر واحد، ثم اقلبه. العدد الكسري تحوّله بضرب العدد الصحيح في المقام ثم إضافة البسط، ويبقى المقام كما هو. والكسر العشري تكتبه كأجزاء من عشرة أو مئة حسب عدد الأرقام بعد الفاصلة، ثم تبسّطه لأن الأعداد الأصغر أسهل في القلب. بعد ذلك بدّل البسط والمقام، وتحقق أن حاصل الضرب يساوي واحدًا. الخطأ الشائع أن تقلب الجزء الكسري فقط وتترك العدد الصحيح، والناتج حينها لا يعطي واحدًا عند الضرب، لذلك اجعله كسرًا واحدًا أولًا.

The 1-mark question with a twist: the number is a mixed number or a decimal. Change it to one fraction first, then flip.

Worked example

$2 \frac{1}{2} = \frac{2 \times 2 + 1}{2}$ — Change the mixed number to one fraction. Multiply the whole number by the bottom (2 × 2), then add the top (1).

$= \frac{5}{2}$ — 4 + 1 = 5, so two and a half is five halves.

$\frac{2}{5}$ — Now it is one fraction, so flip it: the top and the bottom swap.

$\frac{5}{2} \times \frac{2}{5} = \frac{10}{10} = 1 ✓$ — Check: the product is 1, so the reciprocal is $\frac{2}{5}$ .

Worked example

$0.2 = \frac{2}{10}$ — Change the decimal to a fraction. One decimal place means tenths, so 0.2 is 2 tenths.

$\frac{2}{10} = \frac{1}{5}$ — Simplify: divide the top and the bottom by 2. Smaller numbers are easier to flip.

$\frac{5}{1} = 5$ — Flip it: the 1 goes down and the 5 goes up. 5 over 1 is just 5.

$0.2 \times 5 = 1 ✓$ — Check: the product is 1, so the reciprocal of 0.2 is 5.

Common mistake

Flipping only the fraction part: $2 \frac{2}{1}$ . That is 4, and $2 \frac{1}{2} \times 4$ is not 1. Make it one fraction first.

4. Giving the Answer as a Decimal

بعض الأسئلة تعطيك كسرًا عشريًا أو تطلب الإجابة ككسر عشري. بدون آلة حاسبة: اكتب أولًا أن المقلوب هو الواحد مقسومًا على العدد، فهذا السطر وحده قد يأخذ درجة. ثم حوّل الكسر العشري إلى كسر عادي حسب عدد الأرقام بعد الفاصلة، وبسّطه، ثم اقلبه، ثم اقسم البسط على المقام لتحصل على كسر عشري، وتحقق أن حاصل الضرب يساوي واحدًا. الخطأ الشائع أن تقلب الكسر العشري كما يبدو بدل تحويله أولًا إلى كسر صحيح. وإذا طُلبت الإجابة ككسر عشري مقرّب: اقلب أولًا واكتب المقلوب، ثم اقسم واكتب أرقامًا أكثر من المطلوب، ثم انظر إلى الرقم الذي يلي آخر خانة مطلوبة: إن كان خمسة أو أكثر فقرّب للأعلى. ومن الأخطاء تحويل الكسر الأصلي إلى عشري دون قلبه.

Some questions give a decimal like 0.625, or ask for the answer as a decimal. Without a calculator, change the decimal to a fraction first.

Worked example

$\frac{1}{0.625}$ — A reciprocal is 1 divided by the number. Write this line down: in a 2-mark question it earns a mark on its own.

$0.625 = \frac{625}{1000}$ — Change the decimal to a fraction. Three decimal places means thousandths, so put it over 1000.

$\frac{625}{1000} = \frac{5}{8}$ — Simplify: divide the top and the bottom by 125, because 625 = 5 × 125 and 1000 = 8 × 125.

$\frac{8}{5}$ — Flip it: the 5 goes down and the 8 goes up.

$\frac{8}{5} = 1.6$ — Divide 8 by 5 to get a decimal: 8 ÷ 5 = 1 remainder 3, and $\frac{3}{5} = 0.6$ .

$0.625 \times 1.6 = 1 ✓$ — Check: the product is 1, so the reciprocal of 0.625 is 1.6.

Common mistake

Saying the reciprocal of 0.5 is 5. But 0.5 is $\frac{1}{2}$ , not $\frac{1}{5}$ , so its reciprocal is 2. Change the decimal to a fraction before you flip.

Asked to give the answer as a decimal? Flip first, then divide the top by the bottom. Find the reciprocal of $\frac{6}{7}$ , correct to 3 decimal places.

Worked example

$\frac{6}{7} flips to \frac{7}{6}$ — Flip first. Write $\frac{7}{6}$ down: it earns a mark even if a later line goes wrong.

$7 \div 6 = 1.16666 \dots$ — Divide the top by the bottom to change it to a decimal. Write down more digits than you need before rounding.

$1.166 6 \dots$ — To round to 3 decimal places, look at the 4th decimal place. It is 6, which is 5 or more, so round up.

$1.167$ — The 3rd decimal place goes up from 6 to 7. This is the answer to 3 decimal places.

Common mistake

Giving 0.857. That is $\frac{6}{7}$ itself as a decimal: it was changed to a decimal but never flipped. Flip first, then divide.

5. Which Method? Read the Question

انظر إلى نوع العدد المعطى. العدد الصحيح: اكتبه على مقام واحد ثم اقلبه. الكسر: بدّل البسط والمقام. العدد الكسري: حوّله أولًا إلى كسر بسطه أكبر من مقامه ثم اقلبه. الكسر العشري: حوّله إلى كسر عادي أولًا ثم اقلبه. وإذا طُلبت الإجابة ككسر عشري فاقلب أولًا ثم اقسم البسط على المقام. أما القسمة على كسر فلها درس خاص. فكرة مفيدة: القسمة على عدد هي نفسها الضرب في مقلوبه.

Key idea

Dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal: $6 \div \frac{3}{4} = 6 \times \frac{4}{3} = 8$ .
