1. What Place Value Is
Every digit has a place. The place tells you what the digit is worth. Each place is 10 times the place on its right.
| Place | Worth |
| Thousands | |
| Hundreds | |
| Tens | |
| Ones | |
| Tenths | |
| Hundredths | |
| Thousandths |
Worked example
- 1
— One number, six digits. The point sits between the ones digit (2) and the tenths digit (3).
- 2
— The 7 is two places left of the point, the tens place. So it is worth 7 × 10 = 70.
- 3
— The 3 is the first place after the point, the tenths. So it is worth 3 tenths, which is 0.3.
- 4
— There are no hundreds, so the 0 is worth nothing. But it keeps the 4 in the thousands: without it the number would be 472.36.
Rule
The first place after the point is tenths, not tens. There is no "oneths".
Key idea
The oldest known book to use decimal fractions was written in Damascus around 952 by al-Uqlidisi. He put a small mark over the units digit to show where the whole number ends, the job our decimal point does today.
2. The Value of a Digit
The 1-mark question: write down the value of a digit in a number. This is the most common question on this topic. Find the place, then write the digit with that place.
Worked example
- 1
— The question: the value of the 5. First find which place the 5 sits in.
- 2
— Count places from the ones, moving left: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands. The 5 is fifth, so it is in the ten thousands.
- 3
— The value is the digit times its place. So the value is 50 000: a 5 followed by four zeros.
Worked example
- 1
— The question: the value of the 9. It is after the point, so its place is a fraction.
- 2
— Count from the point: tenths, hundredths, thousandths. The 9 is third, so it is in the thousandths.
- 3
— So the value is 9 thousandths. You may also write it as 0.009; all three mean the same.
Key idea
If the question says “give your answer as a fraction”, put the digit over its place. The 4 in 0.34 is in the hundredths, so its value is , which simplifies to .
Common mistake
Writing just the digit, 5. That is not its value. Write the full value, 50 000, or say 5 ten thousands.
3. Writing a Number in Words
The 1-mark question: write a number in words. Split the digits into groups of three from the right. Read each group, then say the group's name.
Worked example
- 1
— Split the digits into groups of three from the right: 30 and 408. The left group counts thousands.
- 2
— Read the thousands group as a normal number, thirty, then say its name, thousand.
- 3
— Read the last three digits on their own. The 0 means no tens, so you say nothing for it.
- 4
— Join the two parts. This is the full answer.
Worked example
- 1
— A bigger one. Split into groups of three from the right: 215 and 060.
- 2
— Read the thousands group, two hundred and fifteen, then say thousand.
- 3
— The last group has no hundreds, so the 0 at the front is silent. Just say “and sixty”.
- 4
— Join the two parts. This is the full answer.
Common mistake
Reading each digit alone, like “three zero four zero eight”. Read in groups of three.
4. Writing a Number in Figures
The 1-mark question: write a number given in words using digits. Write the thousands group, then fill the last three places. Use 0 for any place that is empty.
Worked example
- 1
— The words. “Sixty thousand” is the thousands group; “nine” is what comes after it.
- 2
— Write 60 for sixty thousand. After the word thousand there must be exactly three more places.
- 3
— Fill the three places: no hundreds, no tens, 9 ones. The two zeros hold the empty places.
Worked example
- 1
— The words. Everything before the word thousand is the thousands group.
- 2
— Write 400 for four hundred thousand, then leave three places for the rest.
- 3
— Fill the three places: 5 hundreds, no tens, 7 ones. The 0 holds the empty tens place.
Common mistake
Writing 609 or 6009 for sixty thousand and nine. After “thousand” there must always be exactly three more digits.
5. Millions in Figures
Big numbers are often given in millions, like 4.3 million or half a million. Here is how to write them in figures.
Formula
One million is a 1 followed by six zeros. So “million” means , and the digits move six places to the left.
Worked example
- 1
— The question: write it in figures. The 4 is whole millions; the 3 is 3 tenths of a million.
- 2
— Write “million” as × 1 000 000. It has six zeros, so the digits move six places left.
- 3
— The 4 lands in the millions and the 3 in the hundred thousands. Zeros fill every empty place.
- 4
— Check with groups of three: the millions, then two full groups of three. Seven digits in all.
Worked example
- 1
— Half is 0.5, so this is 0.5 million.
- 2
— Move the digits of 0.5 six places left. The 5 lands in the hundred thousands.
Key idea
Whole millions in words work like thousands: two million, forty thousand and six splits into 2 | 040 | 006, so it is 2 040 006.
Common mistake
Writing 4.3 million as 4 000 300 or 43 000 000. The 3 is 3 tenths of a million, which is 300 000, so it goes straight after the 4.
6. Multiply and Divide by 10, 100, 1000
The 1-mark question: write a number in the box to make the calculation correct. Multiplying by 10 moves every digit one place left. Dividing by 10 moves it one place right.
Rule
Count the zeros: 10 moves one place, 100 moves two places, 1000 moves three places, 10 000 moves four.
Worked example
- 1
— The question. The digits 4, 8, 2 stay the same; only their places change.
- 2
— Move the digits one place right at a time. Each move is one ÷ 10.
- 3
— Count the moves: the digits moved three places in total.
- 4
— Three moves of ÷ 10 is ÷ 1000, because 10 × 10 × 10 = 1000.
Worked example
- 1
— A harder box. The answer 12 has different digits from 0.004, so moving digits alone will not do it.
- 2
— First multiply by 1000: the digits move three places left and 0.004 becomes the whole number 4.
- 3
— Now 4 still has to be multiplied by 3 to reach 12.
- 4
— You multiplied by 1000 and then by 3, so the box is 3000. Check: 0.004 × 3000 = 12.
Key idea
Dividing by 0.1 makes a number bigger. asks how many tenths make 8. There are 80, so , the same as .
Common mistake
Adding a zero to a decimal. is not 3.50. The digits move: it is 35.
7. Using a Calculation You Are Given
Some questions give you one answer and ask for a related one, without a calculator. The digits stay the same; you only decide where the point goes.
1. Given , work out
Worked example
- 1
— The fact you are given. Your answer will use the same digits, 1872.
- 2
— Compare the numbers: 3.6 is ten times smaller than 36.
- 3
— 5.2 is also ten times smaller than 52.
- 4
— Both numbers were divided by 10, so the answer is divided by 10 × 10 = 100.
- 5
— Move the digits of 1872 two places right. Check: 3.6 × 5.2 is about 4 × 5 = 20, so 18.72 makes sense.
2. Use the same fact to work out
Worked example
- 1
— Turn the fact round: if 36 × 52 = 1872, then 1872 ÷ 52 = 36.
- 2
— Now you divide by 5.2, a number ten times smaller than 52.
- 3
— Dividing by a number ten times smaller gives an answer ten times bigger.
- 4
— Check: 1872 ÷ 5.2 is about 2000 ÷ 5 = 400, so 360 makes sense.
Key idea
A quick check for ×: count the decimal places in the question. 3.6 and 5.2 have one each, two in total, so the answer 18.72 has two.
Common mistake
Writing 187.2 or 1.872. Always check with a rough estimate: 3.6 × 5.2 must be close to 4 × 5 = 20.
8. Making Numbers from Cards
The 1-mark question: arrange digit cards to make the largest, smallest, even or odd number. Here the cards are 6, 0, 3 and 8.
Worked example
- 1
— Put the biggest digit in the biggest place. So order the cards from largest to smallest: 8, 6, 3, 0.
- 2
— Order from smallest, but 0 cannot go first. So start with the next smallest card, 3, then 0, 6, 8.
- 3
— An odd number must end in an odd digit. The only odd card is 3, so it goes last. Put 8, 6, 0 in front, largest first.
Key idea
For even or odd, fix the last card first. Then put the other cards in order.
Closest to a number (2 marks): cards 2, 5, 6 and 9. Make the number closest to 6000.
Worked example
- 1
— The closest number is either the smallest one above 6000 or the largest one below it. Find both.
- 2
— Start with 6, then make the rest as small as possible: 2, 5, 9.
- 3
— Start with 5, then make the rest as large as possible: 9, 6, 2.
- 4
— How far the number above is from 6000. Write this subtraction down: it earns the method mark.
- 5
— How far the number below is. 38 is less than 259.
- 6
— So 5962 is the closest, with a difference of 38.
Common mistake
Giving 0368 as the smallest. A number cannot start with 0, so that is really 368, which uses only three cards.
9. Which Method? Read the Question
The words in the question tell you what to do.
| You see | You do |
| The value of the 7 | find its place, give the full value |
| Write in words | groups of three from the right |
| Write in figures | three digits after the word thousand |
| A number like 4.3 million | × 1 000 000: digits move six places |
| A box with × or ÷ | count how many places the digits moved |
| Given 36 × 52 = 1872, find 3.6 × 5.2 | same digits; estimate to place the point |
| Shade 0.6 of a shape | 0.6 × the number of squares |
| Arrange the cards | 0 not first, fix the last digit for even or odd |
| Cards closest to a number | try just above and just below, then subtract |
| Round to 1 or 2 decimal places | Rounding to Decimal Places |
| Put decimals in order | Ordering Values |
| Write 0.35 as a fraction | Converting Decimals to Fractions |
Key idea
Shade 0.6 of a shape with 15 squares: 0.6 means 6 tenths of the shape, and 0.6 × 15 = 9, so shade 9 squares.
