1. The Power 0

The 1-mark question: write down the value of a number to the power 0. The answer is always 1, and here is why.

Formula

is any number except 0, and the small 0 is the power. Whatever the number, the answer is 1.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Start with a number divided by itself. We will work it out two ways.

  2. 2

    — Way 1, the index law: when you divide powers of the same number, subtract the powers.

  3. 3

    — 3 − 3 = 0, so the answer is 5 to the power 0.

  4. 4

    — Way 2, plain numbers: 5³ = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125.

  5. 5

    — Any number divided by itself is 1.

  6. 6

    — Both ways started from the same sum, so their answers must be equal.

Rule

Any number (except 0) to the power 0 is 1: , , and even a whole bracket: . You do not need to work out the inside.

Common mistake

Writing . The power 0 does not mean times 0. The answer is always 1.

2. A Negative Power Means One Over

The 1-mark question: work out a number to a negative power. Each step down in the power divides by the base. Past 0, you get fractions.

Formula

is the number (not 0) and is the power. The minus sign in the power means “one over”. It never makes the answer negative.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Start with a power you know: 2 × 2 = 4.

  2. 2

    — One step down in the power means divide by 2: 4 ÷ 2 = 2.

  3. 3

    — Divide by 2 again: 2 ÷ 2 = 1. This matches the last card.

  4. 4

    — Keep going past 0: 1 ÷ 2 = ½. Now the answers are fractions.

  5. 5

    — Divide by 2 again: ½ ÷ 2 = ¼.

  6. 6

    — Once more: ¼ ÷ 2 = ⅛.

  7. 7

    — Spot the pattern: 8 is 2³, so 2⁻³ is one over the positive power.

As a decimal. Some questions ask for a decimal. Write the fraction line first.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The minus power means one over the positive power.

  2. 2

    — 4² = 4 × 4 = 16. Write this line down: it earns a mark even if the decimal goes wrong.

  3. 3

    — 1 ÷ 16 = 0.0625. The question asked for a decimal, so finish here.

Common mistake

Writing or . A negative power gives a fraction, not a negative number.

Key idea

A negative power has a positive attitude: is not negative at all. It is just .

3. Negative Powers of 10

Exams ask you to switch between small decimals and powers of 10. The power tells you which place after the decimal point holds the 1.

Formula

is a whole number. is 1 followed by zeros, so is a decimal with the 1 in place number after the point.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The minus power means one over the positive power.

  2. 2

    — 10³ = 10 × 10 × 10 = 1000.

  3. 3

    — One thousandth. The 1 is in the 3rd place after the point, matching the power 3.

The other way. “Write 0.00001 as a power of 10.”

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Count the places from the point to the 1. The 1 is in the 5th place.

  2. 2

    — The 5th place after the point is hundred-thousandths.

  3. 3

    — 100000 is 1 with 5 zeros, so it is 10⁵.

  4. 4

    — One over a power is the same power with a minus.

Common mistake

Counting the zeros instead of the places. 0.00001 has 4 zeros after the point, but the 1 is in the 5th place, so it is , not .

4. Fractions and Negative Powers

A negative power on a fraction, or on the bottom of a fraction, uses the same idea: one over means flip.

Formula

and are the top and bottom of the fraction (neither is 0), and is the power. Flip the fraction and the power becomes positive.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. The minus in the power tells you to flip.

  2. 2

    — Flip the fraction upside down. The power is now +2.

  3. 3

    — Square the top and the bottom separately.

  4. 4

    — 5² = 25 and 2² = 4. You can leave it as a top-heavy fraction or write 6¼.

A negative power on the bottom. Work out the bottom first, then divide.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. A negative power sits on the bottom.

  2. 2

    — One over 2³, and 2³ = 8. Write this line: it earns a mark on its own.

  3. 3

    — A fraction line means divide.

  4. 4

    — Dividing by ⅛ is the same as multiplying by 8, because 8 eighths make 1.

  5. 5

    — 5 × 8 = 40. A negative power on the bottom moves to the top as a positive power.

Common mistake

Writing or . The minus flips the fraction. It never makes the answer negative, and it is not ignored.

5. Find the Missing Power

The 1-mark question: write down the value of . Ask which power gives the number.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. Which power of 7 gives 1?

  2. 2

    — Any number to the power 0 is 1, so the power must be 0.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. The answer is a fraction, so expect a minus power.

  2. 2

    — Write the bottom as a power of 3: 3 × 3 = 9.

  3. 3

    — Put that into the fraction.

  4. 4

    — One over a power is the same power with a minus.

  5. 5

    — Both sides are now powers of 3, so the powers match: x = −2.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. A decimal below 1, so again expect a minus power.

  2. 2

    — Change the decimal to a fraction: 125 thousandths is ⅛.

  3. 3

    — 8 = 2 × 2 × 2 = 2³.

  4. 4

    — One over 2³ is 2 to the power −3, so x = −3.

Common mistake

Giving for . Write 9 as first. The power is −2.

6. Negative Powers in the Laws

Exams mix negative powers into the index laws: multiply means add the powers, divide means subtract them. The new skill is keeping the minus signs right.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. Same number, dividing, so subtract the powers.

  2. 2

    — Take the second power from the first. Put −3 in brackets so its minus is not lost.

  3. 3

    — Taking away a negative is adding: −(−3) = +3.

  4. 4

    — −7 + 3 = −4.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — The question. Do the top first, then the divide.

  2. 2

    — Multiplying: add the powers. Keep −5 in brackets.

  3. 3

    — 8 + (−5) = 8 − 5 = 3. Write this line: it is the first mark.

  4. 4

    — Dividing: take the bottom power from the top power.

  5. 5

    — Taking away −2 is adding 2.

  6. 6

    — 3 + 2 = 5.

Worked example

  1. 1

    — Multiplying: add the powers.

  2. 2

    — −6 + 6 = 0.

  3. 3

    — Any number to the power 0 is 1.

Key idea

Show the power after each law, like . In a 2-mark question, one mark is for a correct first step, so a slip later still keeps that mark.

Common mistake

Writing 3 − 2 = 1 for . Taking away −2 means adding 2, so the power is 5.

7. Which Method? Read the Question

Look at the power first.
