The question, in short

A bag holds green, pink and red counters; green has probability 0.52. Find the complement probability, complete a probability table using the pink-to-red ratio, and find the expected green count in 200 draws with replacement.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 1 mark

Find the probability that a randomly chosen counter is not green, given green is 0.52.

  1. 1P(not green) = 1 − 0.52 = 0.48

Answer0.48

Part (b) · 2 marks

Complete the table: green is 0.52, pink counters are three times red counters, so find the pink and red probabilities.

  1. 1Pink + red = 1 − 0.52 = 0.48
  2. 2Pink : red = 3 : 1, so red = 0.48 ÷ 4 = 0.12
  3. 3Pink = 3 × 0.12 = 0.36
  4. 4Pink 0.36, Red 0.12

Answer| Colour of counter | Green | Pink | Red | | Probability | 0.52 | 0.36 | 0.12 |

Part (c) · 1 mark

Flo draws 200 times with replacement; calculate the expected number of green counters.

  1. 1Expected number = 0.52 × 200 = 104
