The question, in short
From a cumulative frequency table for 200 plants' heights, draw the cumulative frequency diagram and estimate the 75th percentile.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 3 marks
Plot the cumulative frequency against height on the given axes and draw the cumulative frequency curve.
- 1Plot (30, 6), (40, 42), (50, 76), (60, 170), (70, 190), (80, 200), starting from (20, 0)
- 2Plot each point at the upper end of its class
- 3Join the points with a smooth increasing curve
AnswerA correct cumulative frequency curve through (20, 0), (30, 6), (40, 42), (50, 76), (60, 170), (70, 190) and (80, 200)
Part (b) · 1 mark
Use the cumulative frequency curve to estimate the 75th percentile of the heights.
- 175th percentile: 75% of 200 = 150
- 2Read across from cumulative frequency 150 to the curve, then down to the h-axis
- 3Answer = the height at cumulative frequency 150, which lies between 50 and 60 cm (a straight line from (50, 76) to (60, 170) gives about 57.9 cm)
AnswerReading at 150
