Part (a) · 3 marks
Expand and simplify (5 + √2)(3 − √8), giving the result in simplest surd form.
- 1(5 + √2)(3 − √8) = 15 − 5√8 + 3√2 − √16
- 2= 15 − 10√2 + 3√2 − 4
- 3= 11 − 7√2
Answer11 − 7√2
Part (b) · 4 marks
Given √(2 9/20) + 6/√5 = k√5, find the value of k.
- 1√(2 9/20) = √(49/20) = 7/√20 = 7/(2√5)
- 26/√5 = 12/(2√5)
- 3Sum = 19/(2√5) = 19√5/10
- 4k = 19/10 = 1.9
Answer1.9
