The question, in short

Expand a product of two surd brackets, then rationalise the denominator of a fraction.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Expand and simplify (4 − √7)(3 + 2√7).

  1. 1(4 − √7)(3 + 2√7) = 12 + 8√7 − 3√7 − 2 × 7
  2. 2= 12 − 14 + 5√7
  3. 3= −2 + 5√7

Answer−2 + 5√7

Part (b) · 3 marks

Rationalise and simplify 2/(3 − √5).

  1. 1Multiply by (3 + √5)/(3 + √5)
  2. 2Numerator: 2(3 + √5) = 6 + 2√5
  3. 3Denominator: 9 − 5 = 4
  4. 4(6 + 2√5)/4 = (3 + √5)/2

Answer(3 + √5)/2
