The question, in short

Given y proportional to (x − 7)², with y = 2 when x = 12, find the value of y when x = 17.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1y = k(x − 7)²
  2. 22 = k(12 − 7)² = 25k, so k = 2/25
  3. 3y = 2/25 × (17 − 7)² = 2/25 × 100 = 8
