Part (a) · 3 marks
Write down five integers meeting the stated lowest value, range, median, total and no mode conditions.
- 1Lowest 8, range 9, so highest = 8 + 9 = 17; median 15
- 28 + 15 + 17 = 40, so the other two add to 66 − 40 = 26
- 3No mode: fourth number between 15 and 17 is 16, second is 26 − 16 = 10
- 48, 10, 15, 16, 17
Answer8, 10, 15, 16, 17
Part (b) · 3 marks
Find the fifth number added to four numbers with mean 17 to make the new mean 20.
- 1Total of four = 4 × 17 = 68
- 2Total of five = 5 × 20 = 100
- 3Fifth number = 100 − 68 = 32
