The question, in short

Solve 3 tan x + 5 = 1 for x in the interval 0° to 360°, giving all solutions.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 13 tan x = 1 − 5 = −4 → tan x = −4/3
  2. 2tan⁻¹(4/3) = 53.13…°, and tan is negative in the 2nd and 4th quadrants
  3. 3x = 180 − 53.13… = 126.9° and x = 360 − 53.13… = 306.9°

Answer126.9 and 306.9
