The question, in short

From a grouped frequency table of 200 oranges' masses, estimate the mean mass and complete histogram bar heights given one bar height of 7.4 cm.

Part (a) · 4 marks

Calculate an estimated mean mass of an orange from the grouped frequency table of 200 oranges.

  1. 1Midpoints: 190, 205, 212.5, 222.5
  2. 2Σfx = 190 × 32 + 205 × 64 + 212.5 × 74 + 222.5 × 30
  3. 3= 6080 + 13 120 + 15 725 + 6675 = 41 600
  4. 4Mean = 41 600 ÷ 200 = 208 g

Answer208

Part (b) · 3 marks

Complete the histogram bar heights for the four mass intervals, using the given height of 7.4 cm for 210 < m ≤ 215.

  1. 1Frequency densities: 32 ÷ 20 = 1.6, 64 ÷ 10 = 6.4, 74 ÷ 5 = 14.8, 30 ÷ 15 = 2
  2. 2Height 7.4 for 14.8, so height = frequency density ÷ 2
  3. 3Heights: 0.8, 3.2, 7.4, 1

Answer0.8, 3.2, 1 (for 180 < m ≤ 200, 200 < m ≤ 210, 215 < m ≤ 230)
