The question, in short

Using triangles A, B and C on a coordinate grid, describe transformations between them and draw an enlargement of A.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Describe fully the single transformation mapping triangle A onto triangle B.

  1. 1(1, 2) → (−3, 2), (3, 2) → (−5, 2), (3, 3) → (−5, 3)
  2. 2Mirror line is halfway between x = 1 and x = −3: x = −1
  3. 3Reflection in the line x = −1

AnswerReflection and x = −1

Part (b) · 3 marks

Describe fully the single transformation mapping triangle A onto triangle C.

  1. 1Match the points: (1, 2) → (1, 0), (3, 2) → (1, −2), (3, 3) → (2, −2).
  2. 2Side (1, 2)−(3, 2) points right; its image (1, 0)−(1, −2) points down: a 90° clockwise turn.
  3. 3Try centre (0, 1): (1, 2) is 1 right, 1 up; (1, 0) is 1 right, 1 down — a 90° clockwise turn.
  4. 4Rotation, 90° clockwise, centre (0, 1)

AnswerRotation and 90° clockwise and (0, 1)

Part (c) · 2 marks

Draw triangle D, the image of A after enlargement scale factor 2 about centre (1, 2).

  1. 1From centre (1, 2): (3, 2) is 2 right, so its image is 4 right: (5, 2)
  2. 2(3, 3) is 2 right and 1 up, so its image is 4 right and 2 up: (5, 4)
  3. 3D has vertices (1, 2), (5, 2), (5, 4)

AnswerTriangle D drawn in correct position with vertices (1,2) (5,2) and (5,4)
