The question, in short

Solve the simultaneous equations 5x + 2y = 7 and 2x − 3y = 18, showing working for 4 marks.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1(1) × 3: 15x + 6y = 21
  2. 2(2) × 2: 4x − 6y = 36
  3. 3Add: 19x = 57, so x = 3
  4. 45 × 3 + 2y = 7 → 2y = −8 → y = −4
  5. 5x = 3, y = −4

Answerx = 3, y = −4
