The question, in short

From Lara's distance–time graph, work out her average speed in km/h over the entire ride, then draw a speed–time graph for a car that runs at 10 m/s for 80 s and slows at 0.5 m/s² to a stop.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 3 marks

Using the graph of Lara's journey from 10 00 to 11 30, find her average speed in kilometres per hour across the whole trip.

  1. 1Total distance = 24 km
  2. 2Total time = 10 00 to 11 30 = 1.5 hours
  3. 3Average speed = 24 ÷ 1.5 = 16 km/h

Answer16

Part (b) · 2 marks

Sketch the speed–time graph on the grid for a car at 10 m/s for 80 s, then decelerating at 0.5 m/s² until stationary.

  1. 1Draw a horizontal line from (0, 10) to (80, 10)
  2. 2Time to stop = 10 ÷ 0.5 = 20 s
  3. 3Draw a straight line from (80, 10) down to (100, 0) (gradient −0.5)
