Part (ai) · 1 mark
Find the total cost in dollars of posting 1950 letters at 84 cents each.
- 11950 × 84 = 163 800 cents
- 2= $1638.00
Answer1638.00
Part (aii) · 2 marks
Calculate the percentage increase when the letter cost rises from 84 cents to 96 cents.
- 1Increase = 96 − 84 = 12 cents
- 212/84 × 100 = 14.28… ≈ 14.3%
Answer14.3 or 14.28 to 14.29
Part (b) · 3 marks
With 96 cents per letter and a 15% discount above $1000, find how many letters Company B posts if it spends the same as Company A's 1200 letters.
- 1Company A: 1200 × 0.96 = $1152, more than $1000 so 15% off
- 21152 × 0.85 = $979.20
- 3Company B (no discount): 979.20 ÷ 0.96
- 4= 1020 letters
Answer1020
Part (c) · 2 marks
Find the cost of posting a 3.5 kg parcel when 1 kg or less costs $4.60 and each extra 0.5 kg adds $1.10.
- 1Extra mass = 3.5 − 1 = 2.5 kg = 5 lots of 0.5 kg
- 2Extra cost = 5 × 1.10 = $5.50
- 3Cost = 4.60 + 5.50 = $10.10
Answer10.10
Part (d) · 2 marks
After a 7.2% increase the parcel cost is $13.40; calculate the original cost.
- 1New cost = 107.2% of original
- 2Original = 13.40 ÷ 1.072
- 3= $12.50
Answer12.50
