The question, in short
From a distance–time graph of a bus journey between 10 00 and 12 00, work out the stopped time, the overall average speed, and details of a cyclist's constant-speed journey.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 1 mark
Using the flat section of the graph, determine how many minutes the bus spends stationary.
- 1The graph is horizontal from 10 20 to 10 56
- 210 56 − 10 20 = 36 minutes
Answer36
Part (b) · 3 marks
Work out the bus's average speed over the entire journey in kilometres per hour.
- 1Distance = 12 km
- 2Time = 10 00 to 11 54 = 1 h 54 min = 1.9 h
- 3Speed = 12 ÷ 1.9 = 6.315… ≈ 6.32 km/h
Answer6.32 or 6.315 to 6.316
Part (ci) · 2 marks
Add a straight line to the graph for a cyclist going at steady speed from 10 30 to 11 30.
- 1The cyclist starts at 10 30 at 0 km
- 2The cyclist finishes at 11 30 at 12 km
- 3Join (10 30, 0) to (11 30, 12) with a ruled straight line
AnswerRuled line from (10 30, 0) to (11 30, 12)
Part (cii) · 1 mark
Determine how far from the route's start the cyclist and bus meet.
- 1Find where the cyclist's line crosses the bus's graph
- 2They cross on the last section of the bus's journey
- 3Read across to the distance axis: about 6.9 km
Answer6.9 (accept 6.6 to 7.2)
