The question, in short
Factorise two quadratic expressions: a difference of two squares in b and c, and a quadratic in x with a negative constant term.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Part (a) · 1 mark
Factorise 4b² − c².
- 14b² − c² = (2b)² − c² (difference of two squares)
- 2= (2b + c)(2b − c)
Answer(2b + c)(2b − c)
Part (b) · 2 marks
Factorise x² + 5x − 6.
- 1Two numbers with product −6 and sum 5: 6 and −1
- 2x² + 5x − 6 = (x + 6)(x − 1)
Answer(x + 6)(x − 1)
