The question, in short

Using the grid with shapes A, B and C, describe the single transformation mapping A to B and the single transformation mapping B to C.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Describe fully the single transformation that takes shape A onto shape B.

  1. 1A and B are the same shape, flipped left to right: a reflection
  2. 2Matching corners: (−5, 3) ↔ (7, 3) and (−3, 3) ↔ (5, 3)
  3. 3Midpoint of each pair has x = 1, so the mirror line is x = 1
  4. 4Reflection in the line x = 1

AnswerReflection in the line x = 1

Part (b) · 3 marks

Describe fully the single transformation that takes shape B onto shape C.

  1. 1B and C are the same size and C is turned a quarter turn: a rotation
  2. 2Each corner (x, y) of B maps to (y, −x) on C, e.g. (5, 3) → (3, −5)
  3. 3(x, y) → (y, −x) is 90° clockwise about the origin
  4. 4Rotation 90° clockwise about the origin (0, 0)

AnswerRotation 90° clockwise about the origin (0,0)
