The question, in short
Use a pictogram with a key of one symbol = 4 emails to compare daily email counts, find a ratio, add Friday's 14 emails, express 6 of 14 as a fraction, and draw a bar chart.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 1 mark
Identify which of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday has the fewest emails from the pictogram.
- 1Compare the number of symbols for each day on the pictogram.
- 2Wednesday has the fewest symbols, so it represents the least number of emails.
AnswerWednesday
Part (b) · 2 marks
Give the ratio of Monday's emails to Tuesday's emails in simplest form.
- 1Monday has 4 symbols, each representing 4 emails: 4 × 4 = 16 emails.
- 2Tuesday has 2.5 symbols, each representing 4 emails: 2.5 × 4 = 10 emails.
- 3Write the ratio 16 : 10.
- 4Simplify by dividing both parts by 2: 8 : 5.
Answer8 : 5
Part (c) · 1 mark
Add a representation of Friday's 14 emails to the pictogram using the key.
- 1Each envelope symbol represents 4 emails.
- 2Friday: 14 ÷ 4 = 3.5 symbols.
- 3Draw 3 whole envelope symbols and one half symbol for Friday.
Answer3 whole envelope symbols and a half symbol drawn for Friday (3.5 symbols)
Part (d) · 2 marks
Write 6 out of 14 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 1Write 6 as a fraction of 14: 6/14.
- 2Simplify by dividing numerator and denominator by 2: 3/7.
Answer3/7
Part (e) · 2 marks
Draw a bar chart for Friday, Saturday and Sunday emails (14, 11, 6), completing the frequency axis.
- 1Choose a scale for the frequency axis: e.g. 1 email = 0.5 cm.
- 2Friday: 14 emails → 14 × 0.5 = 7 cm.
- 3Saturday: 11 emails → 11 × 0.5 = 5.5 cm.
- 4Sunday: 6 emails → 6 × 0.5 = 3 cm.
- 5Draw the three bars to those heights and label the frequency axis.
AnswerBars of 14 for Friday, 11 for Saturday and 6 for Sunday, on a labelled frequency axis
