The question, in short
Given A = w − x²/y with w, x, y rounded as stated, calculate the lower bound of A and show your working.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 3 marks
- 1A = w − x²/y is smallest when w is smallest and x²/y is largest
- 2w = 3.45 to 2 d.p., so its lower bound is 3.445
- 3x = 1.9 to 1 d.p., so its upper bound is 1.95
- 4y = 5 to the nearest whole number, so its lower bound is 4.5
- 51.95² = 3.8025 and 3.8025 ÷ 4.5 = 0.845
- 63.445 − 0.845 = 2.6
