Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1 · Paper 2H (Higher) · Calculator · 4 marks

The question, in short

Given a sphere of radius 2.8 cm (1 d.p.) and mass Mπ grams with M = 260 (2 s.f.), find the upper bound of its density in g/cm³ to 2 decimal places.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.

Solution · 4 marks

  1. 1Lower bound of radius = 2.75 cm; upper bound of M = 265, so mass = 265π g
  2. 2Lower bound of volume = (4/3) × π × 2.75³ = 27.729…π cm³
  3. 3Upper bound of density = largest mass ÷ smallest volume = 265π ÷ 27.729…π
  4. 4= 9.5567…, so 9.56
