The question, in short
Using a scale diagram where 1 cm represents 200 metres, locate house C from house A given a bearing of 110° and a distance of 700 m, and express the map scale as a ratio.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 3 marks
Mark and label a cross for the position of C, using the bearing 110° from A and distance 700 m with the given scale.
- 11 cm on the map represents 200 m
- 2700 ÷ 200 = 3.5, so A to C is 3.5 cm on the map
- 3Put a protractor on A with 0° on the North line and measure 110° clockwise
- 4Draw a line from A in that direction
- 5Measure 3.5 cm from A along the line and mark the point with a cross labelled C
AnswerA cross labelled C, drawn 3.5 cm from A on a bearing of 110° (so down and to the right of A, 20° below the East direction)
Part (b) · 1 mark
Write the map scale in the form 1 : n.
- 11 cm on the map represents 200 m on the ground
- 2200 m = 200 × 100 = 20 000 cm
- 31 cm represents 20 000 cm
- 4The scale is 1 : 20 000
Answer20 000
