The question, in short
Factorise a quadratic, read an inequality from a number line, and solve a linear inequality in w.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.
Part (a) · 2 marks
Factorise y² − 2y − 48.
- 1Look for two numbers that multiply to −48 and add to −2
- 2These numbers are 6 and −8
- 3(y + 6)(y − 8)
Answer(y + 6)(y − 8)
Part (b) · 1 mark
State the inequality for x shown on the number line with a filled circle at 3 and arrow pointing left.
- 1The filled circle at 3 means 3 is included
- 2The arrow points left, so x can be any value below 3
- 3x ≤ 3
Answerx ≤ 3
Part (c) · 3 marks
Solve 7w + 6 > 12w + 14 for w.
- 17w + 6 > 12w + 14
- 2Subtract 7w from both sides: 6 > 5w + 14
- 3Subtract 14 from both sides: −8 > 5w
- 4Divide both sides by 5: −8/5 > w
- 5So w < −8/5
Answerw < −8/5
