The question, in short

Solve the double inequality −8 < 2y ≤ 2 for integer y, and identify the inequality drawn on a number line from −5 to 5.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Part (a) · 2 marks

Find every integer y satisfying −8 < 2y ≤ 2.

  1. 1−8 < 2y ≤ 2
  2. 2Divide all parts by 2: −4 < y ≤ 1
  3. 3y is an integer, so possible values are −3, −2, −1, 0, 1

Answer−3, −2, −1, 0, 1

Part (b) · 1 mark

State the inequality represented by the circle and arrow on the number line.

  1. 1The number line shows an open circle at −1 and shading to the right
  2. 2So the inequality is x > −1

Answerx > −1
