The question, in short
Six numbers in order are 4, 7, x, 10, y, y with median 9 and mean 11. Find x and y.
Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and any diagrams.
Solution · 4 marks
- 1The median of six numbers is the average of the 3rd and 4th values.
- 2So (x + 10) / 2 = 9
- 3x + 10 = 18
- 4x = 8
- 5The mean is 11, so the total sum is 6 × 11 = 66
- 6Sum of known values: 4 + 7 + 8 + 10 = 29
- 7Remaining sum for two y's: 66 − 29 = 37
- 8So 2y = 37
- 9y = 18.5
Answerx = 8, y = 18.5
