Part (a) · 1 mark
Write 5.7 × 10⁻³ as an ordinary number.
- 1A power of 10⁻³ moves the digits three places to the right

Answer0.0057
Part (b) · 1 mark
Write 800 000 in standard form.
- 1800 000 = 8 followed by five zeros
- 2So 800 000 = 8 × 10⁵
Answer8 × 10⁵
Part (c) · 2 marks
Work out (3 × 10⁵ − 2.7 × 10⁴) ÷ (6 × 10⁻²).
- 1Top: 3 × 10⁵ = 300 000 and 2.7 × 10⁴ = 27 000, so the top is 300 000 − 27 000 = 273 000
- 2Bottom: 6 × 10⁻² = 0.06
- 3273 000 ÷ 0.06 = 4 550 000
Answer4 550 000
