Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Multiply top and bottom by √2 + 1: the bottom (√2 − 1)(√2 + 1) = 1
  2. 2So 12/(√2 − 1) = 12√2 + 12
  3. 3(√2)⁵ = (√2)⁴ × √2 = 4√2
  4. 412√2 + 12 − 4√2 = 8√2 + 12, and 2√32 = 2 × 4√2 = 8√2
  5. 512 + 8√2

Answer12 + 8√2
