The question, in short

Three 10 cm by 3 cm rectangles form an arch: two upright with a third horizontal between their tops. Work out the perimeter of the combined shape.

Summarised in our own words. Use the official paper for the exact wording and the diagram.

Solution · 3 marks

  1. 1Each rectangle has perimeter 2 × (10 + 3) = 26, so three give 78
  2. 2Each upright joins the top rectangle along 3 cm, hiding 3 cm on both shapes
  3. 3Two joins hide 2 × (3 + 3) = 12 cm
  4. 4Perimeter = 78 − 12 = 66
